Help with Westy bed hinges

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lofty, May 23, 2013.

  1. Heard something go 'ping' today and when I checked the bed hinge, I found the catch had come off.

It looks like it came off here

But it got me thinking if it was all in the right place anyhow so I checked the other side and found the catch was pushed up the side of the bracket,

I also took a pic of the spring on this side to check if it is in the right place

It seems to me that the catches are getting caught between the brackets and jamming. Does anyone have any pics on how it should go together or advice on how the hinges should work. For example, should they lock somehow ?
    Cheers

  2. The seat should lock in the seat position, then when you pull out into the bed position should ping/ release and allow the seat to lay flat.

To relock, lift the base up to 90' (vertical) from the back whilst still as a bed, the hinge lock should engage so that when you bring the seat base into its seat position it brings the rear of the seat to its vertical position.

If this doesn't make sense pm me your email and ill send a video when I get home.

I don't know anything about the hinges - I just thought I'd say how impressed I am at how clean and shiny your rear wheel arches are.

The hinges lock by swinging the latch under spring pressure from one position to the other, the latches get damaged when the bed is rocked and rolled without waiting for the latch to drop into place, if you straighten out the latch and refit it then the hinges should work as normal

  5. Cheers Fancy bug, it kind of makes sense but I'll pm you for the video anyhow.

  6. I'm having the bus reupholstered at the moment so while the seats were out, I washed, t cut and polished underneath. It did come up nice.

  7. Ah so they are not meant to have a gentle curve inwards then !

  12. so can anybody in the know tell me if there should be springs on my bed mechanism? It's a 79 Berlin and the bed just opens and closes with no spring assist.

there should be a small spring for the latch but nothing to make the bed rock n roll, the hinges plus the weight of the bed makes it an easy one handed operation

  14. I seem to be having similar problems and questions in parallel with you Lofty! On my bed, one of the latches is plain bent/broken with the spring missing, and on the other side it is bent and so needs a tweak from a finger to lock it in to place.

When rebuilding my seat I didn't think these were that important, however having now got my seat back together I've discovered the back of the seat (upright bit) isn't very secure without these latches clicked in to place correctly and so they are needed for the back seat to be properly secure (which I want with the kids in there!). Having had a look at mine I didn't think I could mend them, and so put up a wanted advert for some complete Berlin hinges on here a couple of weeks back. Sadly no one has come back saying they have some.

Fancy-bug - I'd be interested in seeing a video of how they "should" work so that I know what I'm actually aiming at for when I have another play with them - is that offer open to others??

    Thanks

    Nick...

  15. Does anyone have any photos showing where the spring should be a) connected, and b) routed as I don't think the one spring I do have is in the right place - it seems to get caught around one of the studs and then squashed as you move the seat between positions.

    Thanks.

  16. Pleased to say that my newly recovered rear seat is now sitting on some repaired hinges and the rock n roll action is great. Special thanks to Fancy-bug for the video and help.
PeaSoup the spring sits in a notch on the top edge of the hinge and then connects to the little catch. It will get 'caught' around the stud but the important things is to make sure the catches are straight and not bent. Then it works properly. The video that Fancy-bug has shows how the bed works properly. I can send it if you don't already have it.

  17. Thanks for the update lofty. Will have another look at mine and also see if I can find a spring for the side where it's missing.

    Nick.

  18. Glad it worked, I have my bus in work today if you need any photos of where the springs on mine sit

  19. A photo of the springs with the seat both up and down would be really helpful - thanks :)

  20. PeaSoup did you get sorted on the pics and video ?
