Help, just found this!

  1. I have found a hole in the top of the chssis leg. It is where the oil bath stand used to be. can it be repaired relatively easily? The sides and base of the chassis are very solid and you would not know from underneath that this is there. I noticed a flap of metal was lifting up, lifted it and found this.

  2. Calm down, don't panic, I'm sure a competent person should be able to cut out the crud and plate up. Someone who knows more should be along soon.

  3. Obviously the engine will have to come out to get it welded up. Can do that my self, but not the welding.

  4. simple enough repair .....and a common rust spot!!

the area is made of 2 panels, chassis underneath 2mm thick, and a thinner top panel which forms the lip the engine seal goes around....depends how neatly you want it done really? ......if you want a neat job then a largeish area will have to come out so a patch can be welded to the chassis top.....then another plate can be welded in to repair the top panel

the engine should probably come out to get easy access to it....but engine out is easy enough to do :)

I went to town on mine and unpicked the whole of the top panel to get to the chassis, repaired the top panel and welded it back in

can you weld, will you be doing it yourself?

  5. No cant weld. can take the engine out easily enough. do you think it will fail the MOT on this? Will they lift the engine lid? MOT is up soon and i am hoping i can use the bay this summmer and get it sorted in the autumn. Could this be a job for a mobile welder?

    why do they rust here?

  6. ;)

    Visual aid....

  7. thanks Paul. Good pic. Is this gonna be expensive?

  8. if it was me i would try n plate it with the engine still in

a little patch should not be too much tbh

  9. Depends on how far the rust extends dude...

Something like that is a couple of hours work with the engine out

  10. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I wouldn't, that sounds like the typical MOT patch that we're all so fond of moaning about on here, leaving the chassis to rot away underneath. It's the chassis that needs repairing, and to do this the layer on top needs cutting away for access. To try and do it with the engine in will be a right royal PITA and take longer than removing and re-fitting the engine. Hiding the rotten chassis isn't really the sensible way forward.

  11. Good point zed, it depends if he wants to just get though the mot and sort proper later, or sort gud n proper:)

  12. I will get it sorted properly. just want to use the bus for the summer first. Have no intention of covering this up as we are keeping the bay.

Can easily take the engine out. Just an hours work.

  13. north Manchester

  14. Whens your mot due?

  15. Your best bet mate might be to find someone on here, earlybay or vzi that could do the repair (near you) whip your engine out and bung them a few bob to do it one day.
Will work out cheaper than a garage.

    jivedubbin and paradox like this.
  16. First week of June.

  17. Likely as not, you'll only need the top repairing... anyone worth paying to do the job can make what you need!! :)

  18. Cheers Paul. we have 2 places in Manchester that are more than qualified for the job. It shouldnt be too bad hopefully. This is not what i needed while saving up for a better engine.
