Just read your other thread about engine stalling/ cutting out. Maybe the fuel pump was about to give out and now finally has !!
Hmmm interesting. Would that have caused stalling at junctions, was absolutely fine on normal driving.
That is a problem with the idle circuit , like a blocked jet making it very lean, or a petrol leak into the float chamber making it very rich. You can smell the difference in the exhaust. My money is on a fuel blockage in the tank or rust collected in the pipe or pump.. Try raising the tank outlet hose and arranging to blow back through it without drinking or breathing fuel.... It is either going to suddenly clear, or be very hard to blow back into a plug of rust. Which is why the fuel filter is put before the pump outside the engine tinware to protect the pump from crud and show you the crud as well. And where it is protected from heat and flames in the engine bay..
It wasn't coming out earlier but after suckng the tube it did start to flow. It's flowing now but just not getting to the carb feed?
It would seem to be a coincidence that I had a stalling issue and now a fuel pump issue, had no problems before that.
The stock pump when working well can suck hard enough to prime itself easily when all the pipes are full of air, and the stock 3.5 PSI is enough pressure to lift fuel about 6 feet in the air. So if the fuel does not come out of the pump, but pours out of the inlet pipe when you disconnect it, suspect the pump. Check the pivot pin on the pump is still there, just above the base of the pump.
Thanks. I just read an article and everything does appear to point to the fuel pump, fuel to the pump but not to carb feed. I'll order a new pump and see how that goes.
We was at techenders the weekend and this happened starting my beetle engine @davidoft primed it and tapped it and it started working
The push rod it was like an air lock I sucked the fuel up ,filled up the float bowl (though the breather pipe top of carb) was enough to start pumping and that's been sat for nearly 10 years
I tried to suck fuel up the carb pipe but it didn't budge anything, maybe my suck isn t as strong Did he take the pump off or just tap it on the top?
If u push the push rod in u will see the pump pumping (this was a genuine 1 not them gold junk ones the pins fall out) pipes in at bottom out at top yeah ! He tapped it when turning over but u can start it by filling float bowl up and keep tapping near the base of u leave the pipe of carb when running into a bottle u can see what's happening
Magic Tapped it because it was sticking and failing to return and therefore unable to pump, take the pump off and operate it manually to see if it works
Fuel pump off and I've been pressing the bottom to see what happens. When I push, a tiny bit of fuel reaches the filter but then when I release the lug on the bottom of the pump, it disappears again. I can hear sucking noises coming from the pump. I take it this is now definitely a broken pump?
Sounds like it's got some dirt in it and the non return valve isn't working, it is a take a part able one ?
Rights....... New pump fitted, same problem. Re checked the feed and this is now not feeding! How do I clear this ha ha I'm on it...... Just checked the filter near the tank, pretty grim looking. Give it 15 (coffee break) and I'll update.
Well that filter was grim and now changed, still no fuel getting to pump. Is there another filter under the car?
