Heat exchangers

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Carpet Monster, Apr 12, 2020.

  1. Took the heat exchangers off my 2litre type 4 engine to get better access at the push rods to do the seals and the flanges on the left and right heat exchangers are different, am I right in thinking I have a earlier and later type 4 head fitted on either side or are they meant to be different?[IMG][IMG]

Pretty sure / almost certain they should be the same on both sides.

  3. Thanks the reply that's what I thought too I've looked and one is for a later bay 78-79 :/

  4. Yes different heads . One early and one late ..

  5. Thanks mate I thought that, will it make a difference to how the bus runs?

  6. Yes if the valves are different sizes . There maybe slight differences. Did it run ok before

  7. I'd check the part no on the heads too before making a choice, mine had an 1800 on one side and 2.0ltr on the other but both oval port ..
Square port ( without the stub) will defo be a 2.0 as others said off a later bay..
You can cut the stubs off oval port exchangers to make them square port apparently but I'd check some more on that that , could mean just one replacement head instead of an exchanger too... if it was a problem.
With old engines I'm not sure you'd notice too much of a difference but its nicer to match.
Square port heads use a proper gasket and are easier to seal in my experience but others may say different.
If you do go replacement square port watch out for different valve sizes on them too later T25 aircooled ones have bigger valves and will fit.

You probably wouldn't notice. Do the push rod tube seals and put it back together? You were quite happy until you took it apart...

  9. Only did a quick fire up as it had sat for a few years but ran ok, did run it for too long as the push rod seals were leaking

  10. Thanks for the advice, think that's what I will do for now

  11. Good Idea I'll check the part numbers think I'll see how it goes

  12. If they are both 2.0 heads with same size valves , just run them

looking at those 2, 3 and 4 had leaks at the gasket area. Hows the studs look as they waste away on the threads.

  14. Well spotted 2 and 3 had no gaskets and 4 was lose also 2 and 1 were only held on by one stud each :-/

If you cant get 2 nuts on the flanges per port its very possible the heaters will never seal. It makes a type 4 noisy with pops and bangs on over run etc
If there is a stud problem ,removing them is difficult ,even with the heads on a bench, drilling them from underneath the van is a recipe for disaster as often the drill goes off center into the head . My machinist guy has a head fixture which has an angle built into it so that the drill is in the correct position/angle and doesn't wander off center and damage the head.

  16. 1 and 2 are missing a stud each but had a look and threads into the head dont seem to bad the other side one of the nuts on 3 was a bit lose as I've dug about on the bus there has been some poor work done on it to be honest so in not surprised

Roger that. good luck with it.
The head with the studs missing... IF the threads are bad , there are replacement studs that have a bigger thread on the head side of the stud. so re tap them if needed. Think its cool air that has them.

Was it 1700 heads that used the M8/M9 stud from new?

I thought they were all 8mm one end and 9mm the other – they’re part no. N0146841, most of the suppliers have them, Cool Air are probably the cheapest but they’re still £3 each. https://www.coolairvw.co.uk/product/n0146841/

Some are 8/8 - I've repaired them with 9/8's in the past. Perhaps newer 2L are 8/8.
