Anybody refurbed their heat exchangers, what did you use? Can you treat with a rust converter and then paint or can you have them powder coated? What are my options? I have some metallic spray from Frost is this anygood or do they get too hot? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Yorkieman
I did these recently... Just gave them a good clean with the rotary wire brush in the grinder, then painted them with some high temp paint!!
Yeh, they look good, I just wondered if it was worth coating with one of these rust converters first but, can't find one that can go to high temperatures.
If they're in good shape, give 'em a splosh of Jenolite or similar. It'll just stabilise any rust. Then a lick of the paint of your choice (I did mine with silver POR15, as I had some around). They don't get that hot. Worth painting to stop them rotting, as they're mighty exposed under the van.
Are those for a job Paul . I have some repro's I want to get to para and wondered if someone had sent him some ogs?
Those were some OG ones I found in the shed So I tidied them up and sold them Beetle/split fittment though, as they didn't have the high level pull on them that bays have!!
I'm going to have a go at making some stainless type 4 ones for my big engine in the fish... Will run them via a couple of electric fans!!
I threw away the OG ones because they were a bit ratty. I bought new ones., I painted them with good old B&Q white radiator paint. That worked until I welded up some holes in the front part of the "new" ones rusted through from inside after 20000 miles where the exhaust is hottest. After welding patches on the outside, the patches now get so hot that oil dripping off my oil cooler mounting engine block crack (since cunningly JB welded) would smoke away merrily when the van stopped moving. I suppose I managed to make a solid metal contact with the core of the heat exchanger. Before I fixed the oil leak, the outsides did not get immediately hot enough to 'cure' high temperature paint before the leaking oil would wash the paint off.
