Headlight glitch?? Bus owners beware!

  1. Hi Guys,
I've had a recent problem with bulbs blowing in the headlights.
Whilst replacing the latest one, I just happened to notice that the headlamp trim screw was long enough to wind itself directly into the wiring loom that enters the headlamp 'bowl' directly behind the screw (great planning Vdub!)
The front panel on my van is a new Heritage front and the headlamp screw and trim are original parts. The screws are long enough to wind hard into the loom (mine is brand new-or was...) and eventually cuts through it and causes a short.
I recommend cutting half inch or so off the screws.
Tried to upload standard jpeg pics but it said files too big?? Click the links and you'll see what i mean.

vdub brvs and lhu1281 like this.
  2. Thanks for that @lawts0908 ...I've not noticed anything similar on mine, but will have a look. Can't imagine VW would do it as standard though...

  3. That screw isn't original... Far too long for one, and it looks like it is threaded right to the end? OG ones had a smaller tip on the end of the screw for locating them!!

I've also seen this before with replacement screws :)

  4. Yep, you've got the wrong screws. OG screws are shorter, don't have such big heads and are flat bottomed. Also looks like your loom comes into the headlamp bowl too close to the bracket, which points to the aftermarket front you have fitted isn't too clever either.

Perhaps you should change your thread title to 'bus owners beware of fitting after market crap and non standard parts'

  5. Thanks for the heads up its better to say than not as you may save another member a lot of hassle

Its like the late bay aftermarket indicator housings that are wired positive to the body

  6. While you're at, might want to shorten that self tapper for the loom earth in the other side of the bowl. It's much too long and may stab the loom when the headlight's in.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Agreed, that's ******* poor and good reason for the thread in itself.

  8. Thanks guys, all noted. The screw I know is orig and they did have the funny little un- threaded flat bottomed end before I shortened it. Good point re the self tapper Snotty, I'll sort that.
After I posted his, I was trying to remember if the panel was pre drilled for the headlight loom, or if we had to do it. If we (I) did it, then I have masses of the proverbial 'egg on face' because obviously the hole could have been positioned better....... In that case, sorry Vdub, all is forgiven!!
A good thing to take note of though, for all you peeps that may come across this, or are putting on new fronts because it was only by chance that I spotted this. With the headlamp unit fitted, you cant see a thing and you are mystified as to where the shorts are coming from!
    Yours truly,
    The ultimate Muppet.

If that's where the front panel was pre-drilled then someone has dropped a bollock. Right where the only screw fixing goes is daft.
That screw isn't original; or if it is its completely different from any other I've seen.
