Hi all! Apologies if this has already been covered but I've had a search and can't find anything. I'm looking for a replacement pair of headlights, something simple to install with minimal change to wiring but brighter than the originals (not hard). Not being electrical or technically minded I don't really have a clue. Have looked on fleabay and seen all sorts including xenon conversions but nothing is said about the fittings or conversions needed etc So thought I'd ask you guys for advice. Thanks in advance! John
If it has one screw like mine. Then the Hella ones from JK are fine. They say suitable for Mk 1 Golf on the box. Use H4 bulb.
But my candle powered headlights have 3 holes in the rim. Anyone know what upgrade options are good for this type of headlight?
Voltage drop is worth looking at. My headlights dimmed considerably when I fitted an alternator and the only change was the old Dynamo was bit higher voltage. I'm not bothered enough to do anything but I do have H4 Bulbs in sealed beam headlights rather than separate reflectors so they are still ok.
These are the best, possibly, Philips H4 X-Treme Vision. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-12342XV-S2-Headlight-Twin-Pack/dp/B00NMEEOV2/ref=dp_ob_title_auto
Is it possible to just install H4 bulbs in stock original (one screw) headlights? Or does the whole unit need replacing? I've got original bulbs in mine and wouldn't mind a bit more light out front - but if better bulbs would fit in the original units, it'd save £100+ on the Mk1 Golf units from JK.
Yes. I'd quite like to upgrade to H4 type, and if it means buying a complete new unit then so be it - but if they'd go in my original ones obviously that would be easier!
I'm sure my bus came with one H4 halogen bulb on one side and one standard filament bulb on the other side fitted in a manky pair of reflectors... So I fitted the Hella Golf H4 style and it was all a lot clearer.
