has anyone removed a devon roof cap?

  1. I have a devon roof cap, but its stuck on the old roof, anyway to seperate the two?

I tried to just pull but had no luck, and i dont want to crack the cap. :/

  2. i put mine on with some serious adhesive at the sides. may be worth trying something that will 'eat' the adhesive as you pour it down (which would mean roof would have to be off and upside down). would silicon eater do it, maybe? the adhesive supplied came with a pic of a tiger on the front of the mastic cartridge if that helps :)

  3. Hi if the glue came with a tiger on the front then its polyurethane you cant melt:mad: that with anything, its chemical resistant hope this helps.you will struggle to split that with out splitting it :(

  4. The roofs already off, i bought it from a scrap yard,
I already have a roof, just need the cap. So if i destroy everythig else i dont mind.

I was thinking maybe turn it upside down, take the liting mechanisms off, cut the inner seal and try pull the inside bit out? If that makes sence?
Then that may make the outer part easier to prize off.

I dont know what glue was used as i didnt do it.

  5. wow, i didn't know that. i didn't put the bolts in mine as the glue did the trick and has done for 6 years - must be strong stuff!

carlperkins001 don't forget to save the springs out of the donor struts as i would guess that these will be the uprated ones to lift the extra weight :) sound like the best idea is to take off the donor roof to preserve the cap. good luck :)

  6. Yeah i would just leave it asnit is, but i need to change the seals and some of the rivets.

If it is just normal adhesive.. What would melt/dissolve it?

  7. can't help with that, sorry. but i do know that the jk ones came suplied with the tiger stuff which sounds like it'll be a bugger to get off. may be best to have a think about replacing with the rof = cap rather than butchering it? at least you'll know the cap's on tight.

  8. Hi you could try brake cleaner or lighter fluid:thumbsup: but not thinners as this will damage the fiber glass.

  9. wd40 can dissolve some glues but not sure about this type.

  10. yes that it but wd40 is good but will leave oil behind so cant re glue ;)

  11. Wash oil off with plenty of washing up liquid?

  12. Could you get a blade down the sides to try to cut through the glue?

  13. What seals?? o_O

If it has been bonded with tiger seal or any other polyurethane sealer (which is normally supplied) you won't get it to bits...

Any rivets that need replacing, drill up into the cap using a drill stop, so you don't hole it, and just rivet it from the underside!!

  14. The inner seal is perished and the outer seal has cracked all the way round.
And ill be fitting new bellows so need to rivet it on in places. And i dont think you can rivet from the inside as there is no space between the original roof and the cap. :/.

    Tough one...
