We are over run with greys, yet I remember still seeing reds when I was in my teens, so in 30 years (god I'm old) they have been driven out by the American vermin. Can we shoot the ??????
He looks ace! Would love to have an orchard with some wildlife in, a few ducks in'th pond & some squirrels in the trees!
Yes you can legally shoot grey squirrels and also trap them However if you trap one and release it back your commiting an offence Its the same with the invading american signal crayfish you can legally trap/catch them but releasing them back into the water is an offence I positivly encourage people to eat both the grey squirrel and the american signal crayfish as not only are they very good eating you are actually doing the british ecology a favour
I sure will I got informed the other day that theres a stream not far from me that full of american signal crayfish which is great news in one way and bad in another I wasent so sure they had made it up this far north yet but they have so ill be heading to the stream some time in the near future and bagging myself a few
I think that Altcar and Formby are next to each other (but don't quote me on it), so Altcar may run into National Trust property as well, something to do with the sand dunes as i recall. Been a couple of years since i have been but the red squirrels were everywhere. It was obviously spring/summer when i was there and not winter As it would have been hard to spot them then.
I used to live in formby, there is a massive nature reserve at both form by point and freshfield. You can usually see reds there.
The red squiggles at Crosby/Formby Point/Ainsdale stretch of the coast were hit really badly by squirrel pox (from greys) a few years back, to the point were we had a red squirrel 'draught' of about 5 years. You see the odd red now, evidence of more through chewed up pine cones but the new generation aren't as people confident as the old. It'll take a few years but they are now on the up again.
