Gunk under oil filler

  1. Hi, I have just had my engine rebuilt and I'm running it in. Does anyone know what this is under the oil filler ImageUploadedByTapatalk1367436524.117944.jpg

  4. So it's nothing to worry about then.

Normally occurs when an engine never really gets hot.
Wipe it out and take it for a long run, see if it comes back.

You'll be telling him to check his water bottle next!

  8. Yeah prob just condensation build up emulsifying in the oil, if your doing short runs whilst running it in its understandable. As above, clean and monitor.

  9. if the person that rebuilt your engine steam cleaned or vapour blasted any parts water will be involved microscopic molecules will build up in the microscopic nooks and crannies. first couple of uses these evaporate and then condense on the coolest part, the oil filler cap along with some oil hence the emulsion that you have.

    not an issue

    Exactly. ;)

  11. Do you have an original vw oil filler kneck or an aftermarket one?

  12. I dont know if its original or aftermarket, I will take a picture.

  13. It's nothing to worry about - just emulsified oil fumes. Clean it off and take the van for a good run.

  14. I wondered if the engine wasnt breathing correctly.

  15. bugger - the only mech tech question i could ever answer with any certainty and i get here too late *harrumph*

it's 'mayo' - caused by condensation and oil mixing. (said it anyhoo!) :D

  16. If its an original oil filler with the drain tube that drops through the tinware it normally doesent occur as the water condensate drips out of the drain tube

The straight alloy oil fillers stop the crankcase breathing properly as the internal diameter of the breather connection is too small
It will also force oil out from the crank pulley

  17. More likely lack of exercise ;). Go for an "Italian tune-up" down the motorway...

  18. Interesting paradox, I have noticed slight oil marks on my shiny chrome bottom pulley. Will have a better look at the weekend.

Just out of interest, how are you running in the engine?

  20. He just told me not to go over 50! I have been driving it reasonably normally but obviously not revving the nuts off it and not going too fast.
