So I inherited a TV a couple of weeks ago, not new by any stretch - but it's got a few HDMI sockets and a hole for an Ethernet cable, thus I assume I can somehow get the internet on it.
It's a Sony Bravia KDL 32EX503 if that helps, probably dating from 2010/11 ish I reckon. Don't laugh, it was free (as was my last one that it's just replaced. Not called Scrooge for nuthin' ;) )
Anyhow, I should be able to get youtube and stuff, shouldn't I?
I've got Sky already, so I'm not short of stuff to watch, but you know what it's like.... always wanting what you ain't got!
So not wanting to spend much dosh, as the camper is due a bit of welding, and potential blow-over of the 0range bits etc, will a cheap Amazon Fire Stick get me connected up? Is this what I need? Most of the ones on fleabay seem to have Kodi loaded on 'em (I don't know what it is but I have at least heard of it). All I really want is a connection to the internet so I can see youtube and stuff like that on me TV. I can watch on my PC obviously, but who wants to sit in an uncomfortable office chair when there's a sofa to sprawl on in front of the fire. I don't have a laptop and I don't have a tablet / ipad etc.
@Lord Congi , you're usually the guru on these things.... help please :)

  2. Looks like you should be able to as it's not listed here.

Can I add new apps to my Bravia Smart TV?
Certain TV models are only able to run the catch-up/on-demand apps that are made explicitly available for these models through the Sony's Internet Contents.
You cannot install 3rd-party apps from other sources, for example through the Google Play store, on the following TVs:
    • KDL-**W705C
    • KDL-**R5**xC
    • KDL-**WD75*
    • KDL-**WD6**
    • KDL-**WE6**
    • KDL-**WE75**
    • KD-**XE70**

Ah okay, I thought I needed some sort of 'portal' to actually get to the internet bit. I can't seem to find it by just looking. I'll have a look and download the manual, it might give me some clues. Maybe I don't need a stick at all...
    Ta.

  6. I like the technical term..

"I have a hole for an Ethernet cable"..:)

    And then you mention portals....

  7. An Amazon Firestick will give you YouTube without Kodi. I’d be very wary about buying used. A new one is only £40. You can also get all the tv players.

  8. I’d say get the amazon box rather than the stick. The software on the stick runs quiet slowly at times.

  11. Yeah I got rid of my stick as I kept over pressing the buttons as it kept freezing then going back numerous screens when it unfroze - rubbish.

  12. If you watch a bit of YouTube on your Firestick, be aware that Amazon and Google have fallen out, so it won't work after 1/1/2018 :(

Hmmmm, that’s interesting. So if not Firestick / firebox, then what?

  14. Yes, I’ve just turned my Firestick on and seen that message. I also have Apple TV, so will still be able to access YouTube on that, or by mirroring from my iPad. Not sure what non Apple people will be able to do though.

Some mobile phones plug into HDMI.. like Samsung Galaxy S3... which gives you internet on your tv..
But later models like my S7 dont because Samsung wants me to buy one of their smart TVs to go with it..

I will stick with my 2008 Sony and a PC with an HDMI cable plugged into the DVI out as how to get Internet on it.

In general smart TVs last as long as the manufacturer wants to support it.. then the Internet features will stop working..

You dont need Kodi if you are prepared to stick to the light side of the Force and pay subscriptions for pay tv...

The makers of the Kodi software despair of the criminals who load plugins and sell the sticks as a way of providing cheap pay TV.

  17. My sister in law has a smart tv. Not sure of the brand or system, but she says that YouTube has disappeared from it.

  18. As the others have said, if it’s a smart TV it can likely run applications for the major stuff. But...it’ll need an internet connection. Can your telly connect to the internet - wifi dongle sticking out of it somewhere? If there’s no dongle, might as well get a Firestick/Box, as it’ll do much the same thing.
