Gearbox specialist required

  1. Hi All
Just had my gearbox installed for the third time and can't get 2nd gear. Used a company close to me but they're useless. I either need to exchange my box or have it overhauled by a real specialist. It's a 091 6rib box for a 2.0l and I live in South Wales. I'd appreciate your thoughts please?

Cog box or Bears are supposed to be very good.

  3. Thanks baysearcher I'll start by taking a look at those. :)

  5. Sure its definitely not the selector adjustment under the gearshift, they are a mare?

Try loosening off the selector plate from the floor and then trying to find 2nd if you haven't already done so.

  7. ^this. If the lockout plate isn't properly positioned, 2nd can be hard to find coming down from 3rd.

  8. My mechanic has disconnected the linkage and tried getting second at the box and it won't go. It went in with all gears working but only needing a new synchro on 3rd, it back first time and the main spline fell out. Had it back the second time and had no gears at all, came back this time and no second. I've asked for a refund because its taken 6 months. I just want it sorted now as I've not been in it for 9 months!

  9. Does sound like they're useless :(

Sounds like you gave them at least 1 too many chances.

  11. You live and learn :-/ I've called bears they want 300 +vat to strip and whatever parts cost. And cog box want 590 all in. I have to pay shipping for both. What's the best to go for??

Can't Bears give you any idea of parts costs from your symptoms?

  13. Sorry reply didn't come up. I think he's just being careful just in case. I have found local places that have been established years so I may have a chat with some of those too and if I'm getting the right vibe I'll go with it.

  14. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Pete at the cog box , a bit pricey but he is the best in the business.

If it were me, I'd up end it and check inside the nosecone. The selector thingy on the end of the hockey stick has a socket to hold the ball. The cast socket is thin and prone to cracking and the ball wears out. You only need a spanner to look and no tools at all to repair it. Assuming your man hasn't already tried this.

Otherwise what they said^ I've driven a cogbox rebuilt 6 rib and it was fantastic.

  16. Just had my bears gearbox fitted today and drove van from Essex to Northampton. It is great and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Paul at Bears. I've been to the workshop twice and they certainly know what they are doing there.

  17. Yes zed its all been checked. It doesn't select at the box itself so problems inside. Good to hear the excellent recommendations from you all. I'm spoilt for choice all of a sudden! The box is being removed early next week so I've got the weekend to have a think now. So miss not having my bus this year!:-(

It's the box itself I was refering to. Inside the nosecone is the gear selector which sometimes breaks. ...and the nylon ball that wears out. Both are an easy 2 minute fix with no tools. If you were taking it out yourself I'd recommend having a look.

  19. Ok zed thanks ill have a look when he takes it out. Can't wait for this nightmare to be over.

Maybe best just send to it to one of the specialists above then. You might find stuff in the nose cone, fix it, reinstall and still have problems. The summer is here. ;)
