Gearbox question?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lardy, Feb 21, 2014.

  1. Morning, might be a silly question but just wondered if a type 4 gearbox was ever made as a 3 rib?
Mate has had a 3 rib fitted and he's running 2 ltr type 4 engine but I thought 3 rib gearboxes were for 1600's??
    Thanks

I ran my Subaru on a 3 rib so it's strong enough, just the ratios are off so revs were very high in 3rd and 4th gears.

To answer the question, I'm sorry I don't know.

  3. not sure if this is much help but I've got a type 4 2 ltr engine coupled to a 3 rib box.

was told it was an 1800 gearbox when i bought the van, but it could be duff information that i received as i was told it was running a 914 engine which i've recently discovered is just a rebuilt 914 case.

  4. The type 4 came with 3 rib up to the 2 litre which is 6 rib.

If you're fitting a 2 litre engine to a normal bell housing you need to fit the smaller flywheel

  5. Thanks guys, so it could be an 1800 gearbox then? I didn't think it would be a 1600 due to the fact that type 4's only came in 1700-2000 ltr so maybe unnecessary worry. Cheers :)

  6. Thanks Joker, just wasn't sure if they could've fitted a type 4 bell housing to a 1600 box that was all? Have to check what code it is to make sure I suppose.

I believe a 3 rib gearbox is a 3 rib gearbox, fitted to 1600's and T4 1700's. Possibly the T4 1700 has been swapped for a 2L. What year is the van? 73?

  8. They're the same gearbox. The type 4 box had a shorter input shaft.

It's only the 5 and 6 rib box which looks different. So it could well be a 1600 box but it makes no odds as that box is the same as the 1700 and 1800.

I don't think the type 4 was a particularly common engine in the UK

  9. Could be fella.

  10. Ok cheers, will have to check the code I reckon just to make sure

My 2.0ltr type4 came with a 3rib box from factory, but it's a Swedish pickup!

1600 box has the shorter shaft and '75 on bellhousing will fit 228 flywheel and clutch!

  12. Thanks, was concerned wouldn't be the right gearbox for that lump.

  13. All boxes after '75 are 091 type, 3 rib for the 1600 and 6 rib for the 2L.
My understanding is that upto '71 the boxes were the beetle based 113 type, then they beefed the internals up a bit for the arrival of the type 4 engine and those boxes are the 002 type which went upto '75, when they strengthened them again for the new 2L and they became the 091 type. There was a 5 rib box for type 4 engines before '76 but it had 002 internals.

  14. The 5 rib was for the 1800 type 4
