I think you were right first time zedders - push plate to the right. Just seen the same conversation on the buggy forum funnily enough.

Just been for a 10 mile drive in her I'm getting all gears now thanx guys (@zedders i forgot to test if i can get in reverse without pushing down)
Also reconditioned steering box works like a dream it like driving a completely new bus i can drive down a road without doing a Laurel & Hardy to keep in a straight line.

  4. You need to check the reverse lockout on the gearlever plate. There’s nothing at the gearbox end that stops it going into reverse while you’re going forwards

My EMPI quick shifter broke when I first had it , it has a reverse lockout that is based on a top hat shaped piece of metal near the end of the lever under the pivot. The top hat gets pulled up and down by the trigger. This rests on a metal strip which is spotwelded in until it falls out.
The replacement metal is maybe a bit rougher. So if you decide to go firmly from third to second, engine braking into a roundabout for example, sometimes the top hat "grips" , rolls down the lockout metal strip.. and you get crunching as it doesnt go into reverse...

  9. Thank you, that explains the odd crunching noise I get sometimes approaching roundabouts, lol
