Gear Oil Change

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 75swampy, Mar 12, 2015.

  1. Planning on changing the gear oil on Saturday.

    Will this stuff do?

    It does say GL5
And I read that it should be GL4

  2. My oil man says GL5 is just GL4 'super +' and will be fine.
Don't forget to make sure you can undo the filler BEFORE draining the oil out!!!

  3. When do you know you need gear oil change apart from the grinding noise lol. Only my car hasn't ever had a change from new 06 and my bus hasn't since 4 years after I brought it. Just out of interest.

  4. Just change it.

  5. How. .

  6. Get an oil suction pump. Undo top plug. Undo bottom plug. Drain oil. Fit bottom plug. Fill using suction pump. Fit top plug. Better with warm oil. And latex gloves. And nose peg!

  8. Just read about it having additives which contain more phosphorous/sulfurous compounds.

I'll get the job done Saturday. Cheers

  9. Can it be done without an oil suction pump?

  10. If you get the 1l containers with a spout, you should be able to squeeze the oil into it.

Not all 1 litre bottles will fit. Some leave about 100ml in the bottle when it stops coming out. You will need all 3 litres of the oil so choose the bottle that works best and drain the other two into it.

You’d think that as GL-5 has a higher rating than GL-4 it would be better for the transmission, and for some of the components you’d be correct, however, VW specified GL-5 for the diff in the auto transmission, where the gearbox is separate to the diff, but GL-4 for the manual transmission where the gearbox is integral with the diff and uses a common lubricant. In my opinion they did that for a reason and you might like to read this before you use GL-5 http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

I use Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W90 Gear Oil; a fully synthetic GL-4.

And not a bad specification; perfectly adequate for the VW transaxle.

Incidentally, Opie oils is a good supplier; someone there knows oil.
It should meet GL-4 specification but it probably doesn’t have as good an additive pack as branded lubricants –http://www.halfords.com/motoring/en...-oil/halfords-gear-oil-ep-80w-90-gl-4-1l#tab1 click the specification tab and there is nothing there. It’s not particularly cheap for what it is and I doubt if you’ll find anyone in Halfords who knows anything about oil to tell you the difference between brands and grades. Handy supplier if you know what you want.

  17. yeah agreed but i have a trade card so it is super cheap normally and also i will just change it more regularly, its so quick to change it rude not to really, cheap oil changed regularly is fine in my eyes

  18. Job done!
    Pretty easy in the end.
