Gas bottle size advice

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by sharpey, Jan 1, 2013.

  1. I'm looking to install a propane gas bottle in opposite side to battery tray in engine compartment.

What is the maximum size bottle that will fit?

    Cheers

  2. Heavy gas in a compartment with electrics and high voltage sparks :S. Are you sure!!!!!! Best to find a location away from such peril. I have not heard of anyone contemplating this before, probably with good reason. Gas and electricity do not mix well. Any other location available away from any potential ignition and where you can vent to outside in case of a leak?

Nothing wrong with having a gas bottle in the engine bay....
Oilybay on JK had his there for years, including when he had an engine fire. As he's a fireman, if its good enough for him it'd be good enough for me.

  5. Hmmm, well I bow to his greater knowledge, I am just going from common sense. An engine bay sealed at the bottom, heavy gas with nowhere to go plus lots of ignition sources just sounds like big trouble. It's one of those things there is unlikely to be a 2nd chance with, and could put others at risk as well as the bus occupants.

  6. also being a fireman he probably put that fire out pretty rapidly. if you werent so lucky would that not be a potential bomb?

making it a bigger job when you have to fix your van after an engine fire...

i also speak from common sense.. haha

So long as you check your joints are gas tight there really isn't a problem.
You don't panic about having petrol in there do you, apart from checking your fuel lines are in good condition?
During an engine bay fire demo, we were told to leave the gas burning until last. It's not going to blow up if you've forgotten to shut the tap off and you get an engine fire.

  8. good point, i suppose the way more flammable petrol is right behind the engine..
what if you have shut the gas off and you have an engine fire? i suppose it would take a long time to blow up

  9. pretty sure some of the camper conversions had the gas bottle there... definitely on some splits

So, now we've got that out the way, what size fits?
I guess a 907 would go in there - the most popular size too so you'll always get a refil. :)

  14. I've always seen them with the camping gaz bottles in... nice size, is there a need to go bigger??

  16. Cheers guys, I enjoyed reading the debate!!

Ok I might stick with finding a 907.

I was reading the benefits of going with propane during lower temperatures, hence the question.
