Full width bed.

  1. Hi guys. I'm stripping out the back of the van and looking for a full width bed. Can anyone recommend a supplier or does anyone have one?
    Cheers!

A full width bed was a VW Continental westy factory specification and the standard fitting is the one to go for if you are lucky to find one.
Full width really makes sense for a decent night's kip

  4. I have a madmatz ezbed and its great. Can’t recommend enough. Really simple to use and well made. It comes assembled too, so you just have to bolt it in.

  5. what are you stripping out? mine was originally a 3/4 westy bed, took it apart and made wider boards for it, re-used the existing hinges and made it full width. Not hard to do, just a bit of woodwork and re-covering - glue on the foam/ material stapled on.

  6. Stripping out a very inventive but potentially deadly affair involving solid sliding metal rods screwed onto ply.
I had a 3AM vision of a rear impact paralyzing both my children and that was enough to decide me.

... I realise the outcome of front impact isn't great for me either but other than driving in reverse everywhere I go, there ain't much I can do about that!

  7. This ^^^^

The mechanism of the hinge in seat and bed mode is key.

I've just fitted an adjustable R&R from a supplier in Germany because I've fitted Danbury units into a fully lined panel van. Good price @ £210 delivered, but the build quality is poor, the instructions are via an internet link to photocopied pages of an old manual with poor details
Having huffed and puffed to get it in, I've had to fit an additional cross bar behind the seat back to stop it flexing when you sit against it.

  8. I seem to remember @Merlin Cat had one for sale ??
Failing that , Rusty Lee would be , sorry is , my bed of choice ...

  9. This is exactly what I did too with my original westy 3/4.

NLAVW do reproduction westy hinges which i changed to as everything was a bit worn and wobbly on the original ones, but they weren't very good quality and needed a bit of grinding to get the locking latches to sit in place properly.

When I eventually re-layout the inside of my bus, the Devon bed frames will be stretched with some square section steel tubing welded into the cross members, and new ply seat bases and backs will be made.

Rusty lee would be bottom of my list. They weigh a ton and are difficult to use. I've known people literally give them away after hurting their backs making it back into a seat.

Rock and roll hinges for the win, lightweight, one hand back free operation. I can make mine back to seat standing outside with one hand. Try that with Rusty Lee. ;)

Better than finding out the hard way? It doesn't bother a lot of people, but maybe they haven't experienced the ease of true rock and roll action or don't have bad backs!
Have to say they are neat and I believe well made.

  15. Fair enough. They also have a 7/8 week lead time at the mo. Maybe I just get the rock n roll hinges (next day delivery) and add a self made hollow tube frame... Thinking...

  16. A westy just has plywood.. also makes attaching fabric easier as its just staples needed.

BTW for the design of my base i made a few adjustments to the original westy shape to better fit the bus. Only after i completed my upholstery and re-installed it did i find out why westfalia did it the way they did.. so, its a bit tighter than i would have liked but hey, all works

I know exactly what you are talking about. Why the gap? Doh! I got away with chamfering the corner of my 3/4 bed and found out before I had the foam cut.

Westfalia half filled the gap with decorative arm rests?

  18. This is very encouraging thanks @rob.e !
The old bed was just plywood but I wondered about the possible flexing over the full width from a sleeping and seating perspective... thoughts??

Im afraid mine has already been bagsied.

I bought my full width bed from @davidoft. It was an ex Westie one I think. The first time I woke up in my van after installing it I seriously thought I was in a real bed in a house :)
