Fuel smell in the oil (2.0 aircooled)

Sorry, I didn't check what I wrote!

Under the top of the carb (part the floats hinge on) there are 2 cross head screws, I took the cross heads out in my search for dirt, and found under each cross head a hexagonal 20mm long price of brass, with a tiny spring on the end of it, then a single ball bearing about 2-3mm dia at the bottom.

Both cross heads had the same brass piece spring and ball. The cross head screw isn't long enough to touch the brass piece when the spring is on the end and touching the ball

What's it for??? I'm pretty sure nothing popped out, but it seemed strange
