fuel sender removal tips?

  1. any tips on removing bayonet style fuel sender?
read other threads on how to test whats up with fuel gauge reading wrong (my tank is empty but reading just over 1/4 full) and everything seems ok.
so now going to take the sender out and have a look but cant unscrew it.
any tips would be a great help
    cheers

  2. a quarter turn anti clockwise should do it , when you put it back make sure the seal is linged up correctly

  3. the thing is it wont move at all!

  4. tap it with a hammer and blunt object....

  5. neither would you if you had been there 30 years , try 2 big screw drivers as levers on oppistie sides , dont lift up at all as this makes it a tighter fit , you just need to push around , squirt some wd40 around under the lip

  8. just t.wa.t it one - you won't hurt it
    :)

  9. yea i was hitting it pretty hard and thought that i might do some damage to something but if that isnt the case i will go and give it a damn good thrashing! (with my block of wood and hammer not a branch) ;D

  10. pretty hard is not t.wa.tting it. Use some malice.

Use wood though - don't want any sparks
    :)

  11. ok well this isnt working
    no sparks just splinters

  12. you going the wrong way?
    :)

  13. ;D yes im going the right way
its out!! will post a pic in a min i think i see the problem but just to make sure that it shouldnt look like that

  14. Hurrah

  15. right so the gauge was showing 1/4 full when empty and by the look of it where the arm is resting is bent which would not let the arm go right down. (im guessing) unless its ment to be like this?

  16. yes!

reconnect the sender to the van and see if the gauge resiters empty when the float is at the bottom if it doesnt bend the tab back so it reads lower then you will have to rebend the arm upwards slightly so the float doesnt hit the bottom of the tank, if it does read empty with the float fully down bend the arm up slightly so the resistor reads lower at a higher float position. it is all trial and error

  17. strange though as the sender as you can see looks pretty old so it must have been like this for a long time.
not sure if its a replacement or original.

  18. looks like original, nothing to say it has ever read correctly :D

  19. ok so been playing with this this morning and think its had it.
adjusted it so the arm would go lower and the guage read the same 1/4 full.
so then held the arm right up as if the tank was full and it read inbetween 1/4 and half full so think i need a new one.

  20. The resistive track on these wears or gets bald patches. I'd replace it.
