Fuel Sender common cause of problem

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by RM92, Nov 20, 2015.

  1. Im aware this is a common problem...

But my fuel sender will give me full readings one moment and empty the next, so im always in the dark about what i have in my tank.

Im replacing the fuel sender with GSFs 35% offer this weekend but is there any other common faulty replacables that should be looked at? I know the wiring is good as its just been replaced.

    Cheers

  2. Sometims good grounding can be an issue ,
Also removing the guage and the nuts on it holding the wires does fix it .
Sand them all for proper ohm reading .sand the pegs the nuts go on .
Its ohms not electric so it neads a solid contact.even as pictured it could need to be cleaned.
Should fix it, youd be suprised...and your sender and guage is most likely good.
Totaly differnt than your usaul , electric theory
Remove one nut at a time so the vibrator doesnt fall into the cluster .

art b and RM92 like this.
  3. New Sender Unit, get a new seal at same time.

After I bought my van, I checked and replaced all fuel and breather lines etc. but still petrol smell around the sender, PO had fitted new sender but reused old crap sealing ring.

  4. It'll most likely be a break in the wound coil in the sender - the gauge rubs across the wire as the fuel level goes up and down, slowly wearing it away..
