front wheel bearing replacement

  1. My bus is howling from the front end a bit so assume it is a wheel bearing issue?

How easy a job is it to replace the bearings?

Last time I replaced a wheel bearing was about 20 years ago on a Maestro!

    thanks

  2. Inner and outer taper bearing and a grease/dust seal on the back... Probably the same as what you did 20 years ago ;)

  3. thanks Paul - is there any adjustment possible or will they defo need replacing if its making a howling noise.
    Are GSF bearings ok?

  4. no avoid GSF bearings like a dose of the clap , most manuals give a tell how ..

  5. If it's howling then it's close to seizing!! So get it done asap!!

The bearing is adjustable due to them being on a taper... you just tighten the hub nut a little (it's a split nut, so you slacken the built in lock bolt, and that allows you to move the hub nut)

As above haynes covers changing them I'm sure there are a few articles online too...

I use GSF bearings without many issues... I find their sealed double race bearings can be a bit hit in miss, but open faced that you grease seem to be ok!!

  6. This might help.. I've not watched all of it!!

  7. seriously if they are V-tech brand do a google search , decent bearing are not that expensive

  8. I've not had V-tech... usually they're skf

  9. As Paul said, if they're howling, they're on the way out. Easy enough job to change them. You can knock the existing outer races out with a drift.

To adjust them, after initial tightening rotating the wheel/hub, adjust the "nut" (it's got a hex clamping bolt on) until you can just move the big washer sideways with the end of a screwdriver. Easy, peasy. Note that one clamping nut has a left-hand thread.

  10. going to Deva show this weekend, so can anyone recommend where to get the wheel bearings from - would rather spend a couple more quid and get good quality ones.

  11. N/S
