Only applies to speed limits on Dual Carriageways and A-roads. Vans are limited to 60mph if National Speed Limit is 70mph. You can still do 70mpg * if you dare

As for the DVLA - it is only a guideline and you just have to get a bit pushy with them as they really don't have a clue. They were being a*sy about conversions 10 years ago - the reason for gettignit reclassified helps reduce insurance on newer vans. Mine dropped from £1000 down to £300!!!

  2. I shouldn't worry. I can't remember the last time I saw a white van doing less than 70mph on a dual carriageway...

I’ve also been following this as mine was a converted panel van, I’ll try changing mine when it’s back on the road,

I’m hoping it’ll be no problem, as show anyone a photo of a bay window bus/van with windows, and they’ll say it’s a camper van!

  4. Your Speedo might have said 65, what you were actually doing is anybody's guess.
Oh and don't be coming on here pretending you can see your dials in the dark.

  7. Reading round the net tonight it seems the dvla have been refusing most applications for a while now and reclassifying conversions as van with windows even if vans met the previous criteria for motor caravan.

Motor home style graphics and a pull out awning could be fitted but I’ve no idea how you would get round the high top and not a pop top bit.

  8. How long before someone starts producing vinyl graphics that say "motor caravan style".

  9. With the amount that haven’t got through recently (including T5/T6) I wouldn’t bank on it.

    Dear Sirs,
I am writing to request that my vehicle registration number AJ54UPZ is reclassified as a “Motor Caravan”. The conversion has been carried out by a professional company in Barnsley South Yorkshire and was carried out before I purchased the vehicle, despite my best efforts I am unable to establish who did the conversion and am aware of your requirements for the vehicle to fit into the classification of “Motor Caravan”.

Please find a series of photographs enclosed showing details of the vehicle.

    1. Front of Motor Caravan showing registration plate AJ54UPZ. (Photo1)

    2. Rear of Motor Caravan again showing registration plate. AJ54UPZ (photo 2)

    3. Bed in sleeping position. The bed is 6 feet /1800mm long (photo3)
Please note that this is made up from seat used for seating during the day. The key elements of the bed base are permanently and securely fixed to the body of the vehicle. (photo 3A)

    4. Interior detail showing seats and table in upright position. Please note the table bracket is permanently and securely fixed to the vehicle body. (photo4)

    5. Cooking facilities. The cooking facility is fuelled by gas. The gas piping is permanently fixed to the vehicle that feeds two gas hobs. (photo 5)

    6. The gas is supplied via a storage bottle held within a separate cupboard attached securely to the vehicle and to the permanently fixed gas pipe. (photo 5A)

    7. A sink is built into the cooker unit (photo 5) and is fed by a water storage tank within the vehicle filled from an inlet mounted outside the vehicle. (photo 5A)

    8. There is a mains operated microwave cooker fitted to the motor caravan (photos 4 and 5)

    9. There are numerous permanent storage cupboards screwed permanently to the motorhome. A large “wardrobe” cupboard accessible via a tambour door from within the motorhome and a hinged door accessible via the rear doors (photo7) there are further storage cupboards above the cooking hobs, above the fridge, below the microwave and above and below the seating/bed area.

    10. A nearside sliding access door (open) with side window from which access is gained to the rear dining and sleeping area (photo 8)
A further additional window is fitted on the offside above the cooking area.

    11. Photo 9 shows a general view of the vehicle from the rear with the doors open

The conversion of the vehicle to a Motor Caravan was completed on 7th August 2017.

I enclose my V5C document with section 7 “Changes to Current Vehicle” completed.

I request that it be registered as a Motor Caravan.

I also request the seating capacity be changed to 5 as the rear seating/bed facility has a further 2 seatbelts fitted for the use of passengers

I trust that the enclosed photographs provide you with sufficient evidence to make the amendment to Body Type classification. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Yours faithfully,

  11. The rules have been in place for years, but in 2011 they cracked down and stopped doing changes, then relented for a few years again until May this year, when they pretty much stopped changing vans to Motor Caravan and started going the route of Van with Windows.

just goes to show that we dont have a gevernment for the people but a dictatorship for the few, They seem to change things based on the phase of the moon,
But i agree my information is probably out of date now,i had not realised it was almost 2 years ago and not the one year as i thought but maybe the goal posts will move again next week or even tomorrow.

  13. My bus was registered as a Kombi Bus in Nigeria when it was new in 1976.
I carried out a rudimentary conversion to a camper, then airfreighted it to UK, where it came in as a temporary import.
Then we come to the important bit, when it was shipped from UK to Dubai, the shipping agent declared it as a 'Motor Caravan'.
On arrival in Dubai, the customs used the same description, which has remained the same during its subsequent registration in UK in 1989.
It was only shortly before I left Dubai, that I realised how fortunate I had been having the vehicle registered as a motor caravan, as UAE law says, as a private person, you may not own a commercial vehicle, ie pick up, van or a mini bus.

  14. I have gone through this whole scenario and as I see it new motor homes attract very high road fund duty and DVLA are clamping down on people acquiring vans and converting them into motor homes thereby avoiding the higher road fund duty
If you have a camper that has been imported and want to register as such that seems to be the only ones that are getting through
Good luck to anyone buying a van and converting it and getting it re classified
