Seems they have changed the requirements to re register a van as a motor caravan I don’t think I will be able to do mine They require a high top roof but a pop top doesn’t count. https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...van#motor-caravan-external-permanent-features
I'd say you'll be fine, there's a lot of precedence with VW Campers as the list is only for "guidance"
If you don't extend your pop top then you are left with a raised roof I would have thought. Make sure you use non permanent felt tip when you do your graphics. Tony
I thought there was no way to register a converted van to a camper anymore as they just class it as a van with windows so the same speed limits and road tax as a van will still apply.
I must be one of the lucky few . I did my application last year . And within a week I had a new logbook with relevant classification. As Surfari says above its only guidance . My advice is print off the requirements. Walk around the van taking pictures of all the requirements you can comply with. Write a covering letter with a paragraph about each requirement cross reference any photo with what you comply with and also a paragraph about each element you cannot comply with and why . For example they wanted to know who did the conversion and when I simply said I didn't know as it was converted when I bought it and previous keeper had no details . Just apply and if something is wrong they tell you. Just sort the issues out and re apply . I had my photos printed at the supermarket YOU DO NOT GET THEM SENT BACK TO YOU .I DID INCLUDE A PRE PAID ENVELOPE BUT I STILL DIDNT GET THEM BACK All the best with it . I would put my letter up on here if I can find it and know how to post it
Ok, but the point is the DVLA are quite happy to classify them as motor caravans, so just say my Bus is similar to a modern Cali. The point of precedent is not lost on those who implement the law.
When it’s finished if they won’t reclassify it I’ll just leave it as a van and drive it. It will be on classic insurance which is cheap enough and it’s not like I’ll be going over 60 mph. I wonder how long it will be before dvla stop people converting vans and only allow certified conversions from the factory.
I bought a heater of someone that started a business converting vans and he could not sell them because insurance companies wanted to charge a very very high premium because it wasn't a bonafide conversion. Coachbuilds invest millions in safety testing and theirs more you think as a man with a van just makes it up as he goes along with some MDF
When I looked into this a few years back, photos had to show rear seat up ,and converted into the bed , sink and table , and number plate clearly visible in photos taken with rear doors/ tailgate closed and open! I had told them that it was a Vw bay , so maybe that had something to do with it?
I may have been going 65+ briefly yesterday overtaking a truck on the M4. Pretty sure ours is still classed as a van. oops!
