British Airways do not allow bearded pilots because of the risk of fire/explosion if an o2 mask has to be donned. Tony
Its not just yer fancy Dan jobs that are affected by facial hair. My team have to wear dust/cehmical/biological respiratory protection. Currently for most people thats a face mask. Its also a requirement for them to be "face-fit tested" to ensure the things dont leak. With a beard - or anything more than a light stubble they dont work so instead of a mask for a few pence its an air fed respirator costing ££s. Thats ok for permanent beardies but people can just turn up afetr a long weekend or short break with a beard, we have to go out and buy the kit and then they shave it off cos its "itchy" (wusses!)
Would be nice but PPE (and RPE) provision is a legal requirement of the employer!! Its not that big an issue for us but could imagione it being so in some industries.
I once worked in a biscuit factory and had to wear a beard net as well as a hairnet, to stop any hairs getting in the biscuits, if I went on the factory floor. It felt really weird.
I used to work on Das Island back in 1967 (check that out on your chart @Clive Neilands , you are just there by the sound of it) When the 'Shimal' blew, the export tankers could not berth, and the offshore production fields had to be closed down. The burn off flares at the end of the island would extinguish but still belch gas............horrible smell, but we were told only dangerous if it got so strong you no longer smelt it, then we would be evacuated to Bahrain, but it never happened worse luck. Tony
I used to work for UPS who had a short hair/no beards policy, but it was apparently an unwritten rule. I told them cobblers, if they showed me where it was written down that I must shave, then shave I would. They sacked me.
I've been to interesting places..........least ways I think so, now in the real world, Somerset! An interesting fact about Das Island...........1 mile long, 3/4 mile wide, population at that time 1000 men, zero women............................but there were Goats Tennants was a popular choice in the bar, now I find out, after 48 years, that the smell was not the flares after all!! (thanks! @snotty ) Tony
Never noticed that island when I was out there in 1991, probably didn't go that close as we generally ran between Jebel Ali and the northern Persian Gulf. Shaving was considered very sensible, given who knew what chemicals might be found.
