Ive just dropped the engine out for the third time to try and fix the leaking flywheel oil seal,

First time down to inexperience I didn't know to replace the O ring,
After that it seemed ok for a couple of journeys then just got very quickly worse to the point where I can't go more than about 10 miles without topping up its literally pouring out!
So it's out again, I've checked the end float and that's ok! The flywheel mating surface is pretty clean, I wire wooled it shiny last time.

There's a bit of a dark line but no discernible groove!
I've prised the seal out and it does seem to be a very easy fit onto the flywheel almost as if the internal diameter of the seal isn't quite small enough?
Has anyone ever sourced one from somewhere other than the usual VW suppliers?
Or would I be better with a genuine one from heritage! I went for the orange silicone one after reading threads on here and thinking they were the best option!!
    Any similar experiences? Thanks Dunc.

The genuine ones are black and a tighter fit in the case.
Did you oil up the flywheel surface and seal before fitting the flywheel?
Belt and braces use sealant for both the 0-ring and the main seal.
Are you sure it's that leaking? was the back of the flywheel wet with oil radiating from the centre?

Did you put any oil in the sealing surface when fitting the seal? Sometimes if the flywheel and seal are completely dry you can melt the seal edge off

  4. Also check the cam plug, and the area of the case behind cylinder no.3

And as squire davidoft says, you need to lube it before you stick it in ;)

Can't see any evidence of leaks from any other point, there's a puddle in the bell housing but its engine oil!
Think I'll get a genuine one and O ring and have another go try and be mega careful lubing it all up and fitting everything, I'm getting good at engine out now!

  6. this is where an engine starting jig comes into its own!! :)

did you trial fit the oil seal to the flywheel before you fitted it to the case? If you didn't, try it with the new one before you install it :)

I think I was able to get so much oil pouring over the top of the engine with a massive oil cooler o-ring leak that it filled up the bell housing ....
