Always difficult commenting on an event. Some like some hate but it'll be the ones that hate that get heard. That's not a bad thing all the time as it allows people to hear their stories.

I went to a big show in its first year, paid through the nose and got kicked out of an empty marquee for smiling into pouring freezing rain. Had a crap time and the others I was with packed up and left. However I now hear it's a brilliant weekend even though I've never returned.

Another one I've been to wouldn't let you take your own drinks into the middle bit so they could charge you for theirs, I believe that's still the case.

Hopefully the organisers come on and read the comments and make improvements, if not I guess it's a bit like someone signing up just to sell their bus and then ignore people's comments

  3. I've not been to that many shows tbh....Vanfest was great for the first few years, but then became a victim of it's own success....these days I'm less inclined to go to a show unless I know there's going to be a load of independent traders....you can buy most, if not all the spares/bits and pieces online for about the same price, so I enjoy mooching round the non-traders pitches, as you're more likely to find obscure or hard to find items for realistic money....mate of mine went up to York in his new bug and said it was disappointing....very few stalls....

Techenders gets my vote....bit of a bugger if you're looking to buy a badly made Split Screen Cruet set though

When we first got our van we went to loads of shows in the first year and we enjoyed most of them. The second year we were more particular and went to fewer shows and during that year we gradually became a bit bored with the 'sameness' of the average VW show.
We still go to a couple of shows each year but try to make sure there is a big TLB contingent there as its the people you camp with who make a show a success not the show itself.
I'm fairly tight though so my reaction to the cost of many shows is "What? How Much?" and then I pop off and wild camp somewhere and get some reading, walking, drinking and sleeping done.

Ooh....you don't have one for sale do you?

Percy and Susie taste so much better out of a split screen cruet...

  6. We camped with the Bobdogs and friends, something else he forgot to mention.....we all camped in general camping as one of our group were in a water cooled T3, there were no toilets in the general camping field at all until they dragged two loos into the gateway on Saturday morning! For the 50 odd quid I paid for the two tickets, we could find a nice campsite with my mates for the weekend and still have change.
I like the smaller shows and one of my favorites is Dubdayz Summerfest, but will not be heading York way next September. I think we both were spoilt in June when we went over to Holland to Wanroij for the Beetle show, now thats what you call a show and at a great location.....

  12. As an organiser, I always read these kind of threads whether they're about my show or not because I want to know what people don't like as much as what they do like. If you're not trying to keep up with what the audience wants all the time who are you putting your show on for?

  13. How as a organiser could you explain chargeing for a 6 year old and they tryed to charge my 1 year old and there was nothing there for them to do? Seems very mean

  14. As an organiser I read this and am happy that not charging for under 16s and providing a kids mini festival area for the parents to leave the smaller ones for a bit while they look at the cars is the right decision for me and my show :)

Having been to various Elemental Shows in past years, we have always thoroughly enjoyed them, the vibe has been great, well organised and trouble free..friendly folk attending and to top it all, very reasonably priced!

  17. Speaking generally about increasing prices: The only things that have gone up a lot in the last few years are the cost of getting rid of rubbish and the cost of portaloos, both because of the green taxes on waste and landfill as much as anything, that sort of stuff pushes prices up which si why reluctantly I had to put the camping price up a fiver a couple of years back.

However, there's seems to be a preoccupation among some shows with the location having to be some sort of beauty spot, castle, stately home whatever with a nice view. I'd go so far as to say some see it as a bit of a competition. That sort of thing comes at a price which obviously gets passed on to the visitors, and I'm not that convinced the visitors on the whole really care that much. While its very nice to wake up and see a lake or a castle or something, if you're at a VW show you're there to look at the cars and the stalls and have a drink and some vw show fun, if you were into castles for example, you'd go and visit a castle and if you're so into castles that you subscribe to Castle Enthusiasts Monthly or something then you probably don't appreciate all the bloody campers obscuring your view of the castle. I don't enjoy a vw show more because its not at a regular sort of show ground. I accept I'm not everyone but for me its about content content content not location location location

  18. I gets my dander up when people take the rise out of well meaning people like myself, into the ever changing world of Castles.

  19. Castles now Dave? I thought you were just a lighthouse enthusiast?
