Fan Stopped (type 4)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mrguiro, May 24, 2015.

  1. Very slim, it has slipped with the key in, the chances are not. Your best bet would be to remove the fan belt.

Beat me to it ^^ My concern would be if it came loose without the belt driving the alternator and the fan came off you would not know until you cooked your engine ??

  2. Heater flaps open a d set to screen, in line fuse out of leccy fan in engine bay and some paper or ribbon on dash?

  3. Hmm I think I'd rather have the fan belt on and stop to tighten the bolt as soon as the light shows

Yellow taxi...save fuel, and keep peace of mind as someone else takes the driving stress.

    You'll get home quicker too.

Exactly what Moons said...the costs, if you cook the motor are gonna be much higher than that of the yellow taxi.

Or wait till Mick gets the spare woodruff key over to you!

  6. If you want to pay the postage of £18-36 I will send it for a pre 9am Delivery so be there 1st thing Wednesday ?

  7. I've decided to leave the van where it is and fix it next weekend. That will give me time to order the correct part and make sure I have all the right tools,

Would or make sense to replace the front oil seal while I have the fan hub off? Is this as simple as pulling the seal out and replacing before putting the fan hub back?

  9. OK parts ordered from JK. Thanks to all for your help and offer of a key

I've ordered an oil seal as well so will replace that at the same time if I can

  10. No probs, Something I have learnt is that it is the same as the type 4 alternator one, as an emergency repair you could always nick the one out of that to get home !!

  11. Right it's all back together and seems to be running fine now. Thanks for all your help

  12. As a post script to this, after replacing the fan I took the opportunity to put a new fan belt on. I made sure to tension it correctly and made sure the fixing and adjustment bolts were good and tight, however after driving 40-50 miles I found that the belt had turned itself over/inside-out.

Anyone have any idea what might have caused this? It was a belt that I inherited with the van so I cannot be absolutely sure where it came from, but from the packaging it certainly looked like the correct part.

I have now put on another new belt but haven't run the van for long enough to see if the same happens again.

That's right , it was some thing to do with the pulley out of line and wearing it out on one side .

  15. OK thanks, the van's in for it's MOT this week so I'll get the pros to check it

  16. What belt have you got?
I had this endlessly on Ted and also on Freddie.
Changed to a 'toothed' (yes I know they're not toothed but you get the idea) belt and it stopped instantly, never happened again.

  17. Well the one belt I had a problem with (so far) was a Lemforder from JK which was toothed, but I'll see how I get on with the replacement (also from JK but an Optibelt)
