Fan Stopped (type 4)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mrguiro, May 24, 2015.

  1. So, happily trundling along in the sun and the battery charge indicator came on. I pulled over to investigate expecting a broken fan belt but instead found that the fan wasn't turning at all.

The engine still runs fine but obviously no cooling. I haven't taken a close look yet, but how is the fan driven from the engine? Any ideas?

    Cheers

  2. Do you mean the alternator? The cooling fan's on the end of the crankshaft. Alt belt too slack? Alt pulley slipping on alt shaft?

  3. No I mean the cooling fan isn't turning and therefore not turning the alternator. I can now turn the alternator and fan round by pulling on the fan belt so its no longer attached to the crankshaft.

  4. Don't run it anymore or you will knacker the end of the crank, if its not too late

  5. So does the visible bolt just bolt into the end of the crankshaft?

    Can you post a picture?

  7. Yes but it has a key in it

  8. ^this.

  9. Sound like the woodruff key has failed in the fan hub. Probably due to the bolt being loose.

  10. You are absolutely right Dicky. Now the rain has stopped I've been able to get the fan out and yes the bolt was loose (not even finger tight!) and yes the key is sheared.

How do I go about getting a replacement key then?

  12. Ive probably got some !!

What state is the slot in the fan hub ?

  13. Looks quite good as far as I can tell.

The challenge will be getting hold of one in East Suffolk on a bank holiday. Otherwise my van is stuck for a week 50 miles from home

  14. I could post 1st class Tuesday Morning if thats any help otherwise maybe @zed might be able to recommend someone local to that area

  15. That's a really kind offer, I think I've managed to locate one nearby (although it's currently on a Beetle alternator)

Did VW tend to use the same size on most fittings?

  16. No idea but I know I don't have one I'm afraid And tbh i hanent a clue what size they are.

  17. I have don't have a type 1 alternator one to compare, but looking at the size of the end of a type 4 crank and an alternator shaft I cant imagine they would be the same ?

  18. I have just had a very quick look through some crap, this is very unscientific but, I have a type 1 dynamo pulley on the shelf, the keyway in that is thinner than a type 4 fan hub. The only thing I had at hand was a broken piston ring lol. It fitted in the slot of a type 4 fan hub as if it was made for it, it would not fit in the slot on the dynamo pulley. It would fit in the slot of a type 4 alternator shaft keyway slot but if anything the slot was too big by quite a few thou. This probably isn't helping but they all seem to be different:(

  19. No looking on JK there appear to be two keys, one for Beetles/alternators and another for later t2 crankshafts. I don't think the Beetle one will do the job :-(

If I reassemble without the key is there a chance I can get the 40 miles I need to?

  20. Probably will make it ...I'd take the alt belt off so there is less strain on it
