following an attempt a while back to get the fan nut off I retried today without much luck My first attempt was whilst anchored to the engine pedestal, only resulting in the whole alternator spinning no matter how tightly (and chocked and bound) it was. Second attempt in a vice which clamped the alternator fine but nicely smooshed the woodruff to a smear of tasty metal butter against the shaft. As a happy added bonus the big flat screw driver sunk nicely into the aly of the alternator no matter how much wadding around it! Just me or is making the chock slightly more weak than the amount of force to remove the fan nut a great idea! I suppose the alternative is whoever put the nut on last time rattled it as tight as it could go... any thoughts?
heck!! did you get it off in the end?? I had the idea of putting the shaft-end minus the pulley in my (lovely non-broken) vice.... may work possibly
I was well past the woodruff stage! I just needed the fan and was steadily destroying the genny to get it.
I just used a heavy duty 36mm spanner and a big hammer to undo mine last time. It was laid on the floor with a screwdriver in the slot in the pully and my foot on the alternator.
A cheapo Sealey electric rattle gun undid mine when I took it apart. . No need for clamping anything. And I did it up with a quick bash on the rattle gun as well, using just the inertia of the fan and alternator.
if no impact driver: fit the proper sized socket on the nut with a T bar (rather than a ratchet) grip the alt in a vice with rags/whatever hit the T bar with a hammer....they're easier to shock off rather than untighten
