  1. Hi all
Just wondered if any one has a how to - picture story on changing the fan hub oil seal ( type4 engine) or advice on best seals to get or special tools needed , little hints & tips
    Any help/ advice greatfully received.
    Thanks

  2. I'm sure it can be done motor in or out. But you'll need a seal puller, (or old screwdriver) and take your time getting the fan off. I thought I'd be battling mine, but when it came time, I removed the bolts and tapped the fan on the out side edges all the way around and it came right off. I cleaned the case outside surface carefully, then applied some gasket maker and tapped the seal right in. I've been told that if you remove the old seal and there is a bit of a ridge on the crank end, you can tap the seal in or out just a bit so the new seal "runs" in a bit of a different spot on the crank. Good luck (not that luck is involved at all)

  3. Behind the fan carrier is also an o ring. Make sure that you replace that too. Borrow a puller before you attack the job. My carrier was solid to the crank and needed a proper puller to get it off. No screwdrivers would have worked.

It's a piece of cake apart from getting the fan hub off. You can make a puller for that if you have a thick piece of steel, drills, taps and a little imagination. It won't come off without a puller.

  6. Thanks Z
Are pullers expensive to buy, is there a certain size I'll need

  7. But doable with the engine in Z

  8. I had to do the engine mounts too, so the fan housing had to come off too...

I've not made a proper puller yet, but I get by using a crank bearing puller... fits round the lugs on the carrier quite nicely!!

Yes and with the fan housing in place. To make a puller you need a small piece of steel min 6mm thk and big enough to vover the 3 holes. Use the holes in the fan to mark it.
To use, loosen the hub bolt a turn or two, place your plate against it and use the fan bolts.

... Where can I get one from?

  15. I think it's just part of the gasket kit...

  18. I got this made, there was no way the carrier was coming off without a puller.
