Exhaust confusion!

  1. Ok, I have a 1700 type 4 motor and I expected the heat exchanger to exhaust joint to look like this:-

    However, it looks like this:-

    Therefore this will not fit.

Am I being an idiot? Or doing something strange?

What exhaust should I be ordering so that the ports are right?

  2. 72 Cross-over SoCal import.

Those exhaust photos must have been taken really quickly. Empi stuff, out of the box, no rust!

You had a cat system American import , California van ? Heritage sell the exhausts

  5. Noooooo, Booo!
    I want something nicer.
Any ideas? (Given that the original was removed with judicious use of the angle grinder and a reasonable selection of hammers)

  6. Doh,

I have the same problem, nothings simple with a VW:(

unless you wanna spend silly money go for a good used standard system

  8. There's a local company who say they can hand make a stainless system to fit for half the price of some. Might give that a go?

i have exactly the same exhaust ports, triangle 3 bolt california spec' i bought a decent used silencer off davidoft can't find a supplier who sells them, i looked at getting uk spec' exchangers etc to convert but it will do for now.

  11. Same as mine 74 US import, i am using a empi from vw heritage, did see some stainless ones but would have to sell the van to afford them, was going to have a look on Samba and see if I could get a better one from the states,
    Steve,

  12. You can get exhausts similar to your first pic but the right one for your triangle exhaust ports

  13. If you find anything in the States I can "circumnavigate" import tax issues. ;)
Meanwhile I'm gonna get something made by the local guy, if it turns out good, I'll share the news. :)
There's actually bugger all wrong with my old one, I'll retrieve it from the skip for any Latebayers who may need it for spares.

  14. That may be the 1st port of call just so I can drive to the Stainless guy.

  15. No just to match up to the "triangle" heat exchangers but it could look quite good.
There'll be photos in 3 weeks or so.

  16. Or convert to the 72-74 federal spec heat exchangers that have the other type of outlet.

  17. I suspect they're not cheap?

  18. Ouch! Handmade exhaust is (allegedly) less than £350.
