Engine upgrade questions for an eejit

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the crumpets, Dec 10, 2012.

  1. Hello again,

Stock twin port 1600 engine, electronic ignition, 69mm crankshaft (i tink), single carb pict 34, aftermarket stock lookalike stainless exhaust.

I will have a quite a lot of time on my hands in the next few months maybe years!!! to work on the van, one thing i would like to do is upgrade the engine to either 1641 or 1776.

Have been doing a little reading up on it so:

To upgrade my engine to 1641 is a simple question of uprating the barrels and pistons or do i have to machine the case and upgrade the cylinder heads?

To upgrade the engine to 1776, do i uprate the barrels and pistons, get the cylinder heads machined and the case machined, if so what do i get them machined to (dimensions).

Do i need a full oil flow system or will adding a deeper sump do, i know i will have to get a different exhaust and twin carbs for the 1776, any thing else i may need.

It will be a self taught build but i have plenty of time so i do not want to buy one off the shelf

Does any one know of any engineering places in the east midlands (Grantham, Lincolnshire) where they can machine the parts if needed, will travel

Hope this makes some sense to someone on here

Whats wrong with the existing lump bud ?

would you not be better off getting a doner lump and working off that ?

  3. Hello mate,

i am sticking with my lump in the van for now, i have got another lump to work on/uprate. I saw it working before i got it so i know it is a good one.

The long haired general/ she who must be obeyed and my good self intend to throw caution to the wind in 2014 and travel around and i want to build an engine and brake it in for that. the one i have lets its self down going up the hills under load, those who were in the convoy the other year to elemental will vouch for that.

I really want to impress the gurus on here ((lol) laugh out loud not the other one)

  4. 1641 requires no machining

1776 does require the heads and case opening up... as a machine shop will be doing it, you just give them one of your barrels to work from... you want to have the case and heads machined to a slip fit, not an interference (otherwise you'll never get it to bits again if you need to)

  5. Thanks for that Paul,

Is it a simple job to do for a qualified machinist or will the parts be away for a couple of weeks?

  6. It is straight forward enough... I normally look at a 1 week turn round on parts like that, but it does depend on how busy the machine shop is....

One place I use as the last resort, would have them for 6 weeks before they even looked at them, then charge you 3 times the actual cost it should be

  7. Hope the op doesn't mind, but I have a similar question.
How much work is involved going from 1800 to 2lt. And if your increasing that much is it worth going upto 2270 instead?

  8. 1800 to 2l is crank, rods and pistons...

but going from 1800 to 2270 is an extra £5/6k worth of work/parts

But that said, I would go 2270 every time!! once you've gone way over 100bhp, you'll never go back!! 8)

  9. Ah!
The decision is made then. :)
    Cheers Paul

  11. Thanks crumpets. Good luck with your build.

I would stick with the 1600.

Just to add - 1641 upgrade you wouldn't notice - you might even have one already.
Twin carbs you would notice even on your existing engine.
1776 is a very popular upgrade because you re-use your standard crank, keeping the cost down a bit. Most people also change the cam for a slightly sportier one, some use bigger valve heads, some add ratio rockers. I would def have the case machined for the full flow so you can add a filter.

  17. Hello pie, how's things.

I just want to uprate the engine for two reasons. I have never done it before and want a go, me and the long haired general are off travelling and the engine in it at the moment I don't think would make it
