Hi, how straightforward is it to replace the engine tinware foam seal on a standard 1600 type 1 bay with the engine in place obviously. How do you get right around the back / over the back of the doghouse / fan and get that slotted foam seal in position. Any tricks of the trade ? Do I need to get underneath at some / all around it to get it sited correctly
Nimble fingers! A pain, but doable. Stuff it in as best you can at the back, then get underneath and pull it through.
This ^^^ It`s a real ball ache unless you have slim arms and ladies fingers of which i have neither Once you `think` it`s on pop underneath the van and tease the seal over the lip where it`s not fitted properly ...
I’m built like a 10yo girl & find it impossible.... you have to virtually climb in the engine bay!! Good luck
I think I managed it...then again, I may have managed to not do it properly Not built like a 10yr old girl lol but I loathe fiddly things so i’m sure you can do it My van isn’t lowered though so can scramble underneath - re-emerging is easier because there is an automated lubricating mechanism underneath (VW really did think of EVERYTHING)! I'd take photos over the back of the fan housing with a mobile phone to ensure everything is in place correctly. Don't embarrass me by asking why I now know to do this but believe me it's a real pain to dig chewed up bits of foam from the fan
If you put it in the slot and push it from just left of the fan housing, you can reach it eventually from the right hand side if the air cleaner is not in the way, then pull/ push a bit each side and inch it across. Basically if it goes in the groove properly on the left of the fan housing , once you pull it along the groove from the right it will tend to stay in the groove. But check it afterwards. It is a true pain to get rid of foam from the fan.. That one led to having to run after a car in the queue for the Great Dorset Steam Fair because it took so long to get there after abandoning the bus with an off balance fan back at home and grabbing a car instead, I had to take a leak in a hedge. And then run for about a mile to catch up as the queue really started rolling once I was behind the hedge.
You have the perfect body configuration for seal application Mike , and it would seem - making steam ...
Best to keep the ends away from the fan. Not a problem when they are new, but as they age they can break up and fall out a bit.
Looking bloody impossible behind the fan housing, the last one which i didn’t fit ended less than half way round at the back on both sides so it was completely missing adjacent to the fan aperture
It's not that difficult...if you have long thin arms. Only the cooler in the way and that's only a couple of inches?
