Engine flat spot

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Nov 12, 2012.

  1. Hiya guys. Been driving the van about around the yard it's being painted and I've noticed there's an almighty flat spot when accelerating. The engine is reconditioned and only has about 15 miles on it. Do you think it will bed in or am I missing something. I did notice the hot air feed for the air filter isn't connected so I'm gonna sort that out. Could that be it?

  2. 009 dizzy??

  3. Don't think so. How do you tell?!? Just looks the same as my beetles one

  4. vacuum can on the side ?

    Not warmed up ? -
It takes my bus about 3 miles to get warmed up enough with the preheat hose fitted so that the effect of stamping on the accelerator stops being a "lurch", a dip in power followed by a surge and just becomes "acceleration" aka a gentle increase in speed :)

Vacuum leak? old hoses split and dislodged during restoration/garage work ? disconnected vacuum hose ?

What carburettor does it have ?

  6. Almighty flat spot can be caused by vac leaks check for unplugged vac ports on Carb and manifold

  7. Now I've got the van out of the paint shop I have been running it more and it seems to be getting better. It goes when the engine is up to full temperature. It is a new engine so could it just need running in?!? Cheers

The hot air feed will help but only once there is a bit of hot air to go through it.

As I mentioned before, on mine, it is nearly warm at 3 miles and will pull uphill and acellerate in third to 50+ onto the M27.

There is a roundabout at about one mile, and there the bus still struggles to break through 30mph in third on a slight uphill.

  9. Mine does this, I have a 009 dizzy (points and condenser), and I'm pretty sure this is the problem, so an an Accuspark dizzy it is for "Maggie" electronic ignition with vacuum advance ;D

  10. What carb have you got on it?

  11. i'll ave to ave a look. its defo not a 009 but i'm not sure of the exact make
