Hi, We have finally got Polly our '73 bay back from having a full bodywork restoration and a new interior. She now looks fab, but it is time to have the engine looked at - a Type 4 2 litre. We have had a bit of engine trouble since we got her back: backfiring, serious shaking, over-revving, stalling... Can anyone recommend someone who can give the engine a good service / rebuild on the Wirral? or close by? Many thanks!

from the faults you list it sounds like it needs to go to a decent tuning place rather than a vw "specialist" that can rarely carry out these repairs. presuming its carbs, are they the std solex ones?
or one plug could be loose? or the air pipe thingie come loose? That is all I know but I do remember my van shaking when I was younger
