Engine checks in situ

  1. Hey all,

    Still weighing up the options, I did a compression check this evening. Here are the results:

    Rear left 108 psi
    Rear right 105 psi
    Front left 100 psi
    Front right 110 psi

    All within spec but at the lower end. The engine was cold and the starter was not turning it over perhaps as quickly as it could but i am pretty happy with the results.

    I want to check end float too. Is it simply a case of removing the gauze cover from the rear belt pulley and push/pull the pulley with a dial gauge measuring the movement?

    If this result is also good the only remaining concern is the oil leak. Where are the likely sources please?

    PS: what is the cylinder numbering layout on a flat four?

    Did you remove plugs and foot on the floor? If not do it again and you might get higher results.
     
  5. ^what Zed said, if you feel like doing it again. Engine hot (so the rings seal nicely), throttle(s) wide open so they don't obstruct anything. Battery fully charged ;)

    Assume you've got a type 4 engine? End float is going to be less of a prob in these, as the case is aluminium.

    Thanks for the replies... My engine is a 1700 so it is a type 4. It was cold and the throttles were closed. I have to spend the next couple of evenings getting it running properly (PO badly fitted / setup the EMPI twin Weber 34ich kit). Once I get them sorted and the engine running as it should i will get it warmed up and redo the comp test, thanks for the 'headsup'.

    I am intrigued by the type 4 end float not an issue comment. Am I to understand type four engines, such as my 1700, do not have this issue?

  7. pure aluminium case, so a lot tougher than the type 1 mag alloy case!!

    you need the throttle wide open to measure the comp of the engine... it'd be like you trying to run a marathon while breathing through a straw ;)

    Just re-do it on a cold engine for now :)
