engine casing cracked now! repair or new?

  1. The saga continues. Thought I was having my engine put back together today but my mechanic has just called with more bad news. That's 2 months of bad news and no end in sight! Thanks for bearing with me. Its cost me £1350 just in parts alone so far and now I need to get the casing sorted? He was going to start putting it all back together today after sourcing every nut bolt and bloody split pin and when he cleaned the engine he noticed cracks and parts of the casing missing from the sump plug being over tightened. Anyone know the cheapest and best way out of this one?

  2. Hmm. Your man should really have inspected the case as the first thing, IMHO - no point in proceeding with anything else if it's knacked.

    Where's it cracked?

  3. Apparently there's a rod that goes through the middle of the casing pulling it together and its cracked where the sump plug is and the corresponding place at the top of the casing.

  4. Is this a type 4 engine?

  5. Yes its CJ 20.l type 4.

  6. you can actually fit a longer bolt... it's either 5mm or 10mm longer

although, it does depend on how broken it is!!

Just out of interest, what parts has that money got you?? PM me if you like

  7. contact chris raidoman on here (its the longest, most picture heavy thread on here ) he will tell you his engine man welded and remachined the exact same thing on his engine . So all is not lost ,

common problem when tightening the strainer bolt too much

  8. exactly... plus it should only be done up to 14ft/lbs

  9. Thanks for the replies I will get in touch with chris. Paul I don't know all the engine parts but I'll tell you what I know. 2 new heads, used piston and sleeve, bottom end bearings, piston rings, gearbox overhaul that was £360, and any other bits and pieces to put it back together. Its just such a big blow to find this out today I just don't know when its going to stop. may have to wait till after Christmas now cost Santa has to come to my little boy. I may have been better off getting a recon?

  12. Tudor is in Hendy, so not far he is the man for engine & gearbox building in these parts. Everyone knows someone who is supposed to be good, but he walks the walk. You won't find a bad word from anyone about him, he really know his stuff. :)

There are a few good engine builders around, Paul Weeding or Laurie Pettit but Tudor is more local for me & I can pop down & see what he's doing which is a bonus.
    :)
