  1. Can anyone tell me what this case is off please.
Its an AS41 Mexico case but the engine number looks, well home made

It has the little VW symbol to the left of the B then looks like w891688p

And god knows what the letters above are ?

    Thanks in advance

  2. My father in law purchased a VW factory exchange recon. engine for his split window T2., while on holiday in Germany.
The engine had the original S/N removed, and a new number had been applied, so this might be whats happened to your engine.
Another thought is, maybe the crankcase was a spare part, and therefore I dont think it would have been serialised with a S/N from the standard range .

Looks like some sort of re-build

  4. Looks like it started out life as an AB code to me... quite common to loose the first letter on a remanufactured case!!

  5. Mmm Thanks to both

It has the holes for a bus mount, so thats a clue I guess :D ive stripped it down to check it out and needn't of bothered it would seem  It has had a line bore of.5 the thrust still measures 22mm and is spot on and the crank has been ground .25 so yep been done at some point. I just can't see why it was stripped to a short block ?? I guess piston or barrel probs.

It had no end float but thought I would strip it as I have no knowledge of the engine.

Its got a single port oil cooler.

Oh I just found this http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares...p.product_pID_71444052_lang_EN_country_GB.htm

    B CODE

How do you change a single port to a twin port?

Oil cooler mount and heads?? is that it ??

  6. Cheers Paul we over lapped :)

  7. Just looked at the heritage link... that's interesting!! Does it have the type 3 oil filler blank on the rhs of the sump (looking at the pulley end)?

  8. Yes

  9. Answers that question then...

What've you got parts wise? As you won't need much to convert it to dog house cooling!!

    Is it SP heads too?

  10. I have no heads, it was a short block. I have an old t1 oil cooler etc of an old 1600 twinport. Will that fit ? Just heads then? oh and barrels ;)

  11. Yeah, the oil cooler should just be a straight swap, are the holes and stud 8mm? (non dog are 6mm)

heads and barrels are just a fit whatever item

  12. Should be good once you've swapped all the bits over. Is likely a VW recon case.

  13. They are 6mm. Aren't they 8mm on t1 cases. So oil cooler iv'e got won't fit ? :(

  14. It seemed well done and the sealnt used seemed the perfect amount,( if you know what i mean) not the normal gloops of it poking out everywhere. I wish i'd left it in one piece. now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing :)

  15. At least you've learnt something ;). If the case measures up ok and isn't cracked, should be fine. AS41 will mean that it's relatively recent.

  16. No, you can drill the "lugs" on the case out to 8mm and just use the 6mm stud on the top of the case with a decent size and thickness washer on it :)

  17. Nice one thanks
