Electrical conundrum

  1. As per the title, but a bit more complicated.

    Right, hope this makes sense

Every time we indicate, the alt light comes on, fuel gauge stops working and we can't indicator, cue plenty of arm waving. Hazards still work. Sometimes if you press the horn the light goes out. :) but problem happens again when we go to indicate. Checked all the wires over and there's nothing burnt out, everything is attached and has a clean connection, everything looks properly earthed too. Any have any idea what may be the problem. Or any pointers :)

  2. Check the main earth, and the black power wire to the speedo cluster... sounds like something isn't getting a good connection...

  3. All connections look good, didn't really check over the main speedo wire. Will have a look, thanks paul

There is probably one wire disconnected feeding the fuse box. So power to the dash is being provided by the alternator warning light feed instead of a fused feed. Any time the drain is more than the fuel gauge the voltage drops to the pint that the warning light comes on. I bet the fuel gauge under reads too.

And remember that a crimp connection is a good way of cutting through a wire or only crimping the insulation and missing the metal bit completely - I had a fuse holder with pre crimped connections from halfords where the grunt putting it together had not stripped the wire . It worked until the vibration from the engine shook it loose and then worked again if you touched it.

  5. Cheers for that info, I will go check everything again head was mangled after looking at wires for hours on end :)

cold beer and watch the highlights of the cricket me thinks :)

    Cheers

  6. Sorted, checked everything with a meter, everything was ok, took out the fuse and checked them, put it back in and it all works again, must of been it quite fitting right, anyway cheers for your help.
