dynamo to alternator - which bits?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Diddymen, May 27, 2013.

  1. evening all

I've bought a 75A alternator to replace my dynamo

Obviously will need a new (original) stand and a new fuel pump but which other bits will I need new, or which bits can I use from my old dynamo???

can I reuse all the shims and spacers for the fan impellor .....what about the coller that the shims fit over (I cant seem to get that off the dynamo)

can I reuse my backing plate and fan ....and what about my woodruff key and pulley?

    all advice grately appreciated :)

Depends what you're replacing. First you say dynamo, then you say alternator.

  3. lol, I thought I'd made it clear....until I re read my original post !!!! .....now ammended

I am removing my dynamo and fitting a new alternator.....so just needed to know if I could/should strip any of the bits off of the dynamo to use on the new alternator

why didn't you buy a kit? the fan and backing plate is different and so is the stand

.....for those reading davidoft pm'd me the link

Isn't the fan the same unless you had a single port non-doghouse shroud?

  7. I believe I have a twin port and dog house fan shroud......but not 100% sure

just realised.....I've just got the old dynamo backing plate powder coated :(

Pretty sure there are just two types of fan - the depth varies. one for SP housings that were generally dynamo and a deeper one for TP doghouse.

Ps vw heritage will stock them, they also come up on eBay all the time ,

  11. I've just offered up my backing plate to the alternator and it seems to fit, it fits over the studs - is this what I should be looking at to see if it is ok to use?

....so what is the differentce between alternator and dynamo backing plates?

  12. Isnt the backing plate for an alternator slotted to allow cooling air to be drawn through the alternator

If you have a doghouse fan shroud the fan should be larger this is to provide the extra air thats dumped out of the back after traveling through the oil cooler

They are a different shape to allow for the different length so the belt is still aligned

  14. I was speaking to some one else today and they said that ^^ is the main difference to look out for

my backing plate is 'dished' in towards the fan housing, while some are flat

......so which is right for an alternator  .......I guess fit it and put a straight edge against both pullies to make sure they are in line? .....bit of a pain if I've got to take it all apart again though :(

  17. cheers mate ^^ mine looks similar to that but without the groove running to the centre

it was the other bit that sits on the others side which I meant was dished ....and some are flat .......what is your other part like? as I think it might be that part that determines where the alternator sits?
