Drive Shaft Bolts Torx T40?

  1. Can any of the technical gurus confirm that the drive shaft bolts are Torx T40?

    Ta

  2. No, they're not. They're either hex or 12-spline.

  3. WHS^^

    6mm hex or 8mm 12 spline

  4. Cheers guys, just realised my error now, next daft question before bed, just reading Bentley, it says you need a press to get the joint off (need to do the boots for MOT), I was thinking that the joint would come off the splines without needing a press, is that the case?

  5. Can be done with a puller or if you re carefull, drive shaft in a workmate with cv hub resting on surface and then drift out shaft. Be ready to catch the shaft:)

  6. you have to note mate the Bentley ,being the factory manual will rarely if ever deviate from accepted engineering /workshop practice . I,e, if that is how it should /must be done then that's how they tell it ,if a press is the way then u need a press ,thou most home mechanics cannot get close to the set up they have and so we improvise (necessity being the mother of invention ,an all that) ive never known anyone use a press ,its usually circlip off and cv joint either slides off or tap with wooden mallet

  7. Might need a simple puller if it's a bit tight on the splines (which is good). Certainly don't need a press.

  8. Pony beat me to it...:)

  9. My memory! I use an impact driver to get the bolts started out. Saves the chance of stripping the heads

  10. Thanks all. I did think the press was a bit ott. I have a hub puller if needed. It should easily come off the splines but then again, the clutch arm should have but was seized solid. May chicken out of this and let the mot garage do the job.

  11. Nooo. It's easy (but messy)...

  12. Agree with Snotty, and?but if the call comes that the cv joints are "iffy", you may find the "dished washer, fit >don't fit" scenario is applicable to your bus ,who will make that decision,? it is a straightforward enough job ,and whoever does it ,do re check tightness of the securing bolts at say 50 and 100kms.

  13. Snap clip can be a bit of a pain if you ve not got snap clip pliers, but its possible with a pair of screwdrivers. Be careful they can go off with a hell of a ping, but are easy to refit, just drift with a socket. If you've got blue balls (ooer) its a new joint. Get all parts really clean, a bag of rags, some tubs.
When re assembling take note of the grooves that the balls run in. They are machined at an angle, so let's take the hub; on one side the grooves where they exit the top edge are close together. Flip it over and they are wide apart. Same for the outer. To assemble the joint correctly set the grooves so that you have the narrows on one part in the middle of the wides on the other.
Take your time and get to know the parts, coz believe me you'll be doing another for the next MOT:) Take piccies
