Does anyone else miss university?

  1. Yeah I do.

  2. when I retired from a career in IT, I did Computer Science at the South Bank University, loved it and the other students called me Grandad, but I knew more than they did.

You said the local techs produced more value, as they don't do research I assumed that I that front it would be zero.

  4. No, I said the country has benefited more, so please don't mis-quote me.

The amount of university courses that offer research opportunities is very small, most of which is done by post-graduates, who represent a tiny percentage of overall graduates, most of whom leave higher education at that point.

    ?

You must have a different way of measuring value and benefit to me then, hey ho.....and I'll try and use the academic way of referencing you in the future of you need to be precious about it (see appendix B).

My simple point was only that university research underpins most of what you touch, consume and see in terms of things invented by humans. That research has added a probably immeasurable value to the country, far more than whatever mechanism produced students themselves.

Unsure about today, but I know 25 years ago most universities income was split 3 ways, one third being research funding from industry or government/europesn grants I.e. tuition fees contributed around the same amount, so it's a lot of money. The output of that has value/benefit to the county that tech colleges haven't as they aren't aligned for research.

I absoloutely agree that the value of people with practical over theoretical skills has been dreadfully underplayed for years, I'm simply pointing out what might be a hidden benefit.

  6.

  7. There's nothing precious about putting someone straight if misquoted.

Up to you how you want to quantify funding, but income % is in no way reflective of the resulting benefit to the country.

  8. Blimey !

  9. Try designing an iPhone with stuff you've learned "on the job" or at Tech College ;)

It was ace, I did a few years, more than 10, never counted, drank lots was very merry still speak to my uni friends and lived in lots of shared houses, must of lived with 50 plus different folks, a year with dancers, one of my favourites :D , did some crazy stuff, still do sometimes, would go back tomorrow if I could, got some qualifications, use lots of stuff I’ve learned and lots I don’t.

  11. There’s loads off stuff you never use - I’ve never done a bloody Laplace Transform in my life - but you need to know it’s there...

That's reassuring as I've not nominated it is.....can you not misquote me as I've not mentioned income or % therein...

See how dull this could get.

I suspect we are furiously agreeing on 'people' contribution, my only point in addition being universities contribute massively with research.

  13. Try making one without it !

Can we assume that the Chinese slaves that do produce them went? In between throwing themselves from rooftops the poor sods.

  15. All I see is you stubbornly digging out of a hole you dug by making an assumption that was wrong.

But you're right, I already know how dull this can get......

  16. ;). Just making the point that if there's stuff you need to know in certain areas, it's only really taught in Unis. You can't do everything empirically or intuitively.

Stanley Hooker, who transformed the Merlin engine at Rolls by (re-)designing the supercharger, did it all on paper, using fluid-flow analysis. "I'd never actually seen a supercharger. To be honest, I'd never seen an aircraft engine before...".

Well, I'd nominate it's more your pulling me up on two words and completely ignoring what I was actually trying to add to the discussion.

Feel like commenting on those points or can I conclude you have nothing valid to say on the actual point and we can both enjoy more 'how to win an arguement 101'?

  20. Youth is lost on the young...... I hated uni, and now with my youngest in his first year I wish that he grabs it with both hands and shakes it to pieces ....... just like I didn’t!!!
