do my new carbs need tuning? Poor fuel consumption & fast tickover

  1. Just replaced my Solex carbs with a new pair of Brosol Solex carbs on my 1700 type 4 engine.
Start fine from cold & tick over OK but doesn't rev very well from cold.
When the engine warms up a bit and the chokes come off, the bus pulls ok but the engine revs stay up during tickover, even with the throttle levers nowhere near the throttle stops.
    Also, horrendously poor on fuel.
Does this sound like the carbs are running too rich and need tuning/re-jetting?
Would a rich mixture cause a fast tickover?
I assume that carbs don't just run 'straight out of the box' and need properly setting up?

They need balancing and setting up properly. They won't just bolt on and go. May also need re-jetting.

  3. get it rolling roaded mate, you wont regret it, go auto tronix developments in Sheffield

72 quid for the rolling road and tune up, then if they need rejetting like mine did, then the price goes up but not much! mine came to 142 quid and it was so well spent!

strongly recommend it, its like driving n new van!

    B :D

  4. Brosol -Blurgh :(

Sorry to say it dude, but they're overpriced pap... you'd have been better off getting some icts!!

You might be lucky with them, but I'd book it into a rolling road to make sure that the jetting is right on them!!

My experience of the brosols is that they run rich on idle, and lean on the mains... :(

  5. Bough them new but from a private guy & only paid £180 but just trying to get the bus running right as I knew the OEM carbs were running right - should get my money back on them if I sell them on, question is will they tune up ok or am I better off buying some better carbs to start with then get them tuned up.
Anyone know of a good place to get them set up around the West Midlands?

  6. do you have a carb balancer? I bought one of the gunson ones and it seems to work fine. not very accurate but does the job okay. I would have thought they'd have sold you the carbs with the correct Jets already in but it may depend on the seller and if you told them what you had. I'd get them balanced and set the timing and valves and see how it's running. make sure they arent sucking in air from anywhere too ;)

  7. Got it booked in at Aldon Automotive on Thursday for a rolling road tune up but just noticed that the carbs do not have any return springs to close the throttle levers - does anyone have these actual carbs and how have they set up some springs - I think this could be the reason the revs are staying on as the levers are not returning all the way so the flaps are not shutting off fully inside.

Although I think I have got the only set of these carbs in existence.

  8. I've seen them with a long compression spring from the throttle cable link, to the top of the engine bay

You can use shorter springs from the throttle levers to the air filters
