Dizzy advice on a 1600 sp

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Russbmx, Apr 5, 2016.

  1. Hi all.
    Looking for a little advice.
    I have a 1600 sp with a 30 pict single carb and it has a 009 dizzy.
Power is a bit flat with the occasional flat spot.
Iv been thinking of changing to twin carbs but at the same time I'm not keen on cutting out my air box bracket....so I was thinking of loosing the 009.
So my question is, what dizzy would I need to be looking for? What should it have on it from Original?

All help will be greatly appreciated as always

    Cheers
    Russ

  2. Hi Russ - plenty of posts on this - have a search .
£60 accuspark set up from eBay seems like a popular choice .

    :hattip:

  3. Bummer, I must be typing in the wrong search words as I didn't find much

Il take a look at that on eBay then.
I'm more interested in what it should have fitted and buying a decent quality original one if possible.

  4. A Mexican 034 dissy with vacuum advance is a good bet if you can find one (at a reasonable price).

  5. I've just changed from a 009 to an Accuspark with vacuum advance. Happy with it so far, seems more responsive.

Buy an Accuspark and then search through the years for the correct Single Port (ideally) Bosch distributor. What is the engine number I might be able to look up the likely correct distributor code for it.

  7. Yeah that's ideally what I would like...a correct Bosch one for my engine.
I'm not sure what the engine number is tho off the top of my head.
It's a recon so the number may not be relevant?
I'm working on the bus tomorrow evening so il have a look for the number and then post it on here

30 Pict? I think that one belongs on a single port beetle with vac only advance. No wonder if it doesn't go well.

  9. I was thinking the same...

  10. I could be wrong....it might be a 31 pict.
Any idea what it should have?
    It's a 74 1600 sp

Cheers for the help it's greatly appreciated

34 Pict 3 is the norm.
I think that one is for smaller engines. I'm not expert enough here, Google is your friend.

  13. I'm Pretty sure a 34pict is for twin port engines and would be to big for my manifold.
    To Google it is then

  14. Just out of interest I understand that Kevin from Riverhaus http://www.riverhaus.co.uk/ is planning to do reconditioned distributors later this year. Maybe something to bear in mind due to the increasing amount of poor quality repo dizzys out there. Just saying like ;)

  15. I've been searching for an original dizzy since creating this thread..... I've been offered a 0 231 168 001 but struggling to work out what it came off and if it would be any good for mine?
If anyone can point me in the right direction or knows what it's from I would really appreciate the info

Think it's a 1600 twin port one, I may have a single port one, I'll take a look

0 231 168 001 will be fine but if you are still running with a 009 any cheap as chips SVDA distributor will be far better; just replace the cap and rotor arm and they’re not bad distributors.

I believe a single port one has a bigger vac can, presumably as a single port creates less vacuum

Which is presumably matched to a different carb?
