Distributors

  1. Here's a question if any of you can answer it for me please?
I'm looking through the tinternet after I've painted my timing mark and see a post on 80-90s site about cu distributors and the chap basically ended up finding out that he had a vac dizzie for a 1600 on his CU 2ltr aircooled from a T25.
Now here's the dilemma, I can't see any markings on my dizzie but know it was on the 2ltr engine which was in the van, given to me in bits, so i stuck it into the CU engine, (as i dont have the electronic boxes for the CU dizzie) which has hydraulic tappets and supposedly a better engine. It all runs but the timing seemed abit strange when checking the readings and there's not much power when I'd expected to be able to go 60+ atleast, I managed 50ish on the motorway?
Anyway here's the question, what dizzie could I use on this engine? Looking at just slotting in a replacement part for a T25 CU engine knowing its the right one without all the necessity of having to source a loom and boxes for the electronic side of the dizzie? Hopefully this makes sense?? Thanks in advance :)

  2. There should be a long number stamped on the side of the dizzy

  3. I can't see one ??

"Bring it round and I'll have a look" as they say. :D

  5. I've ordered an ignition kit from Accuspark and was going to fit and see if that makes any difference. I figured that I may have a problem with the cams on the distributor shaft being worn? Anyway, I'll do that and see if I can get over to you. I need my gaskets on the auto box changing so maybe something we can do when I get over? :)

  6. Cams? On a hall sender dizzy?? o_O

Can you check what colour the spark is? it should be big and blue!! If it is yellow or weak looking then the coil and the TCI unit need replacing!!

It's a really good system if you can stick with it dude? A lot better than any 123/accu/pertronix system!!
Essentially the same as what was fitted to the MK2 Golf GTi

  7. I was just wondering really if I could fit a distributor that wouldn't work with my later CU engine? Would there be a difference between the two distributors other than the electronic ign and the points side of things?

  8. Just the advance curve will be ever so slightly different!! Other than that, they are exactly the same!! :)

  9. Spark is normal, engine runs and goes ok ish, just wondered if I didn't have the correct distributor?

  10. Advance curve differs how?

If it won't go over 50, it's something more basic than an advance curve. ;)

  12. Well without taking the dizzy to bits and weighing the bob weights, it'll be hard to tell!! But I would assume that it'll have a slightly sharper one... but the total advance will be the same (28-32° without the vac connected)

  13. exactly

    weak spark
    fuelling issue
    bad exhaust leak
timing out by a country mile ;)

  14. I'll have to start a fresh I feel. If you're saying the dizzy shouldn't make much difference then it's got to be something else so that something at least. Thanks guys :)

  15. Hydraulic lifters...

    How have you set them?

  16. I haven't adjusted them, they were done by BugMad when he finished off the welding and a few bits.

  17. I'd start there then dude!!

To adjust them, you set that piston to tdc, wind off the adjuster until the tappet isn't touching the valve, then slowly wind it back until it makes contact, the give the tappet 2 full turns...

Do this to each one, and then see how she runs!!

I went through a hydro engine recently, was purring like a kitten when I was done!!

  18. That's great, I'll start there. Thanks :)

  19. Oi. Go and wash your mouth out ;)...
