  10. Mine is substantially lightened with plexiglass windows, a single seat, all the cupboards and the spare wheel have been re-moved and I can pull wheelies on the standard 1600 engine and run 14 second quarters....

  11. I had to put all the weight back in mine to keep the front end down!!!

  12. When I cut all the rust out I was tempted to leave it as a lightened special, but as I had nowhere left to fix a number plate I abandoned that idea

Engine in vehicle properly maintained and driven within its design tolerances - utterly reliable shock!

    Nothing to see here....

And as for Jap engines being unreliable.....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhahahahahahahahhahahhahahha. The fact is the boxer engine is a compromised design hence why it's either been largely unchanged (BMW motorbikes) or simply not used by anyone ever (other than Subaru).

  14. The mechanical reliability of my bus has far outlived its structural integrity (read rust) It came to me with a knackered engine. I fitted a second hand one and changed the gearbox cos I uprated to 2 litre. I swapped that one out for a new one as it was getting tired. In 20 years of ownership ive replaced the front calipers and discs, 1 CV joint. A number of exhausts it has to be said and heat exchangers a couple of wheel bearings. That's probably about it - its just the rust that's the killer.

  15. A friend of mine had a 72 bay from new -told me he blew the engine at 80k miles travelling on the M6 up the hill past Lancaster - bet he was trying to get 70mph from it though. Oh - and he said the gear lever came away in his hand when he was on holiday in Devon in 1975 - not sure how he got home - probably in 3rd all the way!.

  16. That, in comparison to my style of driving, displays a complete lack of mechanical sympathy.

  17. Ditto @Dicky , very little in the way of replacement parts . Breakdowns ?? it`s never been towed in the 20+ years i`ve had it , always got me there ....* Touches noggin - and again ..* .
Just had the motor recon`d so we`ll see how that goes , i`d be happy to get half what i got out of my last one - a VAGE recon fitted on 28th July 1994
