Sure, people were told to buy them, or were at least encouraged to do so, now they’re telling people not to buy them and penalising those that do. The goal posts have moved, and rightly so, I don’t see the problem.
Personally, I don't see how producing millions of electric cars, and infrastructure, is the answer to the environmental issues, it's just "good" for the economy, which is all the government gives a ***** about... Give it ten years, when we are all driving milk floats, they will change the goal posts again and penalise those that bought into it again... and so on. It's worth signing the petition just to let them know you are *******ed off with them, but they won't give a *****, and will carry on shafting us, while claiming they are saving the world...
So HGVs are exempt Does this mean HGV diesel vehicles don't polute, or is it that the country would grind to a holt if they where banned/priced out of existence. Should it be the same for everyone?
If we all drove electric vehicles, where would the lost road tax revenue be found? Or indeed the electricity to power the charges.
Diesels pollute less than petrols. That’s not in debate. It’s other side affects which make diesels worse. Some kind of lung issues.
They pollute less but the pollutants are much worse for you, dunno how they work out pollution if it’s not based on the bad effects
Sorry if I annoyed you earlier by asking "what's the point?". It's not necessarily the content of the petition I have a problem with, it's these petitions themselves. Like I said earlier, they were set up to make the public think they have a voice. If you look at the petitions on the petition.parliament.uk some of them are so poorly thought out that even if they do get 100,000 signatures, it's not clear what the government are being asked to do. It keeps the petitioner happy though as he thinks he's making a difference.
The industry is on its knees, it may not appear that way, but high fuel and vehicle costs, shortage of drivers ( 45k short ) poor crumbling infrastructure, high demand and poor staffing levels etc is beginning to show. At the moment they’re offering silly money to entice people in as they have no option. There are hardly any kids taking up hgv driving as a career as it’s silly hours and very stressful on the family life. One more push and a lot of hauliers might just give it neck. Mark my words, commercial haulage as we know it is nearly gone! I don’t know what the alternative is, but I can’t see the answers to their present problems without major major changes in the job!
Don't worry, you certainly didn't annoy me - we all have opinions, and I'm certainly not afraid to voice mine and you shouldn't be either. My point was that if you believe in something, say it. Whether it effects a change or makes a difference or not.... we fight, we may lose. But if we don't fight, we will lose. Metaphorically of course, I'm a pacifist, no physical fisty-cuffs for me As far as the petition is concerned (back on topic!), I bought a diesel car because the fuel economy was vastly superior. And long ago, diesel was cheaper than petrol too! Now Diesels are deemed to be worse for the environment than other forms of transport power. Petrol fractionally better, electric best of all apparently (although how all this electricity is generated..... but I digress). So don't produce diesel cars anymore. I get that. But this is about penalising people who have them already, and making them so financially unattractive that we all form a queue at the local scrappy and chuck them all in landfill. That ain't right, especially as we were actively encouraged to buy them not so long ago. Sign. Don't Sign. But if you do care and still don't sign, don't winge.
I know mate. I was just saying. I think it’s a blow they could do without right now. It won’t matter in ten years time, me n me 350000 driving mates of around my age will all be retired and they’ll have to stand the trucks, or automate them!
Keep buying diesels when everyone else has a mega eco petrol ...diesel will come down and petrol will rocket up ...as Phil Lynott said Don't Believe A Word .
The funny thing is, I work in an engine plant making diesel engines, so I have a vested interest. I just don't think those petitions achieve anything other than making people think they're making a difference.
I think, sadly, petitions have lost a bit of their weight since setting one up online became easy. There’s petitions about blinkin everything, and some of them are plain stupid ( and very badly written!). Social media strikes again. Some do matter though. If we give up, what happens? I’d prefer to try something even if it ultimately comes to naught. But I see what you’re saying. Can you sneak me out a Diesel engine from work when no ones looking? The one in my car is getting a bit old
