What I said yesterday basically. There is a wire coming from the T that coulld be connected to your light somehow. The blue one. The carbs are poor even though they seem to pull okay most of the time. What reading did you have before you started her up Si?
Does it T from the bottom of the sender Steve like the one in the picture? He has a wire on the sump too.
Around 11.8 it didn't move when she started it But surely if alternator not working wouldn't my battery have been flat it's basically been stood since September
Alternator doesn't charge while it's stood still does it. I reckon you have a good battery that held the charge that your good alternator put in previous to you knocking a wire off somewhere. My guess is the blue charging wire from the alternator to the light in the engine bay. Check that wire Si.
This is one of the problems I'm having with electrics The middle wire has tiny bit of brown then it's spliced to blue Also if you look hard (sorry about quality)that green wire which I think should go to alternator is just in a loop going nowhere and that yellow wire has been cut top left of pic Still these things are sent to test us I suppose
It probably previously had a dynamo or alternator with an external regulator, hence the wiring alterations. Blue loop is odd, it doesn't go through the gromet?
looks like it has been changed from external regulator The big red wire should go from the big stud on the alternator to the starter motor or battery the blue one should go from the spade on the alternator to the dash light
Yes that middle brown and blue wire goes to a box thing on the left hand side of the bulkhead Did you say that's something to do with a hot start M ? zed that blue loop is green and no it doesn't go through grommet
So it should be Blue goes from spade on alternator to dash warning light brown bit goes from spade on alternator to split charge relay Big red wire goes from the big stud on alternator to starter motor or direct to battery The green would of been part of the link between alternator and external regulator so is now not used
I should have realised it was a split charge relay not the hot start. The hot start relay looks the same but usually on the other side. Matt has it mate. That's the split charge relay.
Some good reading on electrics done by @Diddymen http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/how-to-read-a-wiring-diagram.10556/ http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/how-to-using-a-multimeter-and-testing-for-faults.4688/
Well I thought I'd try out my new multimeter today after reading @Diddymen so I thought I'd check out battery light( blue) wire continuity was fine Anyway whilst it was off alternator I put other end back onto bulb behind dash and turned on ignition and light came on WHY?
The black wire that also attaches to the light has 12v and lights the light. When the alt is excited it sends 12V up the blue wire and cancels the 12v from the black wire extinguishing the light.
