Cv joint/driveshaft circling

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Sep 24, 2013.

  1. I've fitted a new cv joint but am struggling to get the new circlip onto the driveshaft. Do I need a "proper tool" for this? Looking at snap ring pliers, they all seem to have little pins at the ends to locate into holes on circlips, but my cv circlip doesn't have these which makes it seem like they wont be much good.
Any tips? Cheers, jerry helmut, esq

snap ring plyers and circlip plyers are different thing dear, I have both ;) you can try some needlenose plyers pulling the handles rather than squeezing

i put the shaft in a vice and pulled the clip apart with 2 pairs of mole grips and fed it on

  4. Aha well I snapped a tip off my needle noses ages ago so that's out! I'll try the mole grips. I'm trying to do it with shaft still connected at one end ......I know.........so it's probably harder than it should be.

What would be the correct tool then......snap ring pliers??

you can use a jubalee clip , does not look as neat but quite acceptable and easier .

  6. u can if u wish ,use a jubilee clip , (no disrespect intended ,but are you having a "jeffing " laff ?

    yup snap ring plyers :)

you can try 2 little screwdrivers to get it on the end then push it down until it 'snaps' into place ;)

  8. wasnt too sure meself! doesnt sound quite right eh!

  9. will try again tomorrow then, and if no good, make wifey buy me a tool!

  10. I think @Faust is on about the boot clip... well I hope he is, but I still wouldn't use a jubilee for that... that's what cable ties are for!!

As for the snap ring issue, you can use a socket that is just bigger than the shaft.... grip the shaft in a vice, or up-ended on the floor with some blue paper or newspaper on the ground to stop contamination of the other joint... place the snap ring on the end of the shaft, and using the socket and a hammer, you should be able to get the snap ring to pop on with a couple of deft blows!!

Why is the other end attached still? You're making it very hard for yourself and likely to get muck in it. This job really needs a bench mounted vice...

  12. Good idea Paul, I'll give it a try.

Basically I was trying to do as little as possible in time and money to get back on the road very quick. It started with needing to do one cv boot, but then I dropped the joint so had to redo that as well, didn't want to strip the other end a swell and end up doing that. But as always, when i try and save time it normally takes longer.......

  16. dont have a socket big enough to fit over driveshaft for the "weeding whack" so the winner is ................the rickyroo method, thanks cocker! a vice grip on each end and spread em baby. still a pain in the bum but got it there in the end.

  17. Sounds like you need to upgrade your socket set ;)
