I'm about to embark on fixing up 'Funkyard' the manky US westy, to at least get it UK legal. I'll be removing the roof and have been thinking through what to do, paris style foldback or what you've done. I've been thinking this through and woke up at about 3am with a thought and an idea. Is that plexi-glas on your roof, and is it bonded in place and drilled though? Just asking because I was thinking whether this is an option for me, but wondered whether it will cope with the torsional stress if its hard fixed into place? I was thinking about something similar, but having a windscreen seal modified to fit it in place to allow for movements. What do you think - do you think how you have applied it is suitable? thanks,
I used 5mm lexan which is very very strong that I have used in 200mph dragsters - i utilized my dormi frame that was in place - i also added an extra crossmember to add a little strength it was then bonded and drilled and nut and bolted in place . The inner edge prior to bonding was sprayed gloss black to finish the edges - To finish off the edges I have made cover strips that will be sprayed the same colour as the van and bonded into place - Yes I am more than happy it is strong enough with the added x member in place -
cheers is that Lexan stuff readily available off the shelf somewhere in small quantities? Like I say, i'm looking for something to plug up a former westy hole so it sounds like that will be ideal. By extra cross member I guess you mean side to side?
Small update as I haven't done a lot but here goes The light oak floor is now laid in the main seating area and in the rear section - Rob came over and carried out the ancient art of Indian wood bending and has bonded the finish timber to the seat faces in the rear section It now needs lots of light finish sanding and lacquering - i have a big grin on my face it looks nice - Next to fit a Jag rear seat into the front so now i need a hand with the following so don't all rush at once please A headliner needs to be fitted - Seat cushions and door cards need to be trimmed pics in the next couple of days but she is starting to look sexy
Dale, you know whats gonna come next mate you cant tell us what youve been up to and not show us the end result!! ;D
OK here are a few little pics The curved faced wood needs to be prepped and lacquered - The gap around the botton has a polished 1" ally kick panel which will have a few led in to light the floor - The seats will consist of cushions trimmed in tuck n roll style -any one want to do them for me pleeeeeezse . I have tried to be simple but creative This is the rear area under the curved drum is an amp and a sub this will be trimmed to match the door cards
